Rica Nidelven Hotel is a large and beautiful hotel, centrally located in Trondheim. The rooms are bright and pleasant, and many of them have wonderful views of the harbor. I would definitely recommend this hotel, but I think perhaps that the feedback on TripAdvisor is somewhat exaggerated. There are a number of similar hotels in Norway, the rooms are not particularly large, the interior is getting somewhat outdated and the bathrooms are very simple. I was not impressed by the breakfast the last time I stayed at the hotel. Is breakfast buffet smaller in summer than in the rest of the year? My assessment is that this is a good, but also very ordinary, chain hotel.

This hotel was booked for us by the Hurtigruten cruise line as part of a cruise extension. It was very conveniently located, fifteen minute walk (with luggage) from the cruise dock and a ten minute walk from the main train station. The room was very comfortable and well appointed. The reception staff were friendly and efficient - check-in took two minutes. Our room was on the fifth floor out over and facing the Nidelva river. The buffet breakfast was the most complete we have ever seen - cold cuts, boiled eggs, cereal and bread, custom omelets, smoked salmon. etc etc.

Room Tip: Ask for non-smoking on the top floor facing the river.

I stayed at Rica Nidelven for two mid-week nights on a business trip. The location is convenient for the airport bus, as the hotel is only 100 meters from one of the bus stops. It is at the edge of the old city center, just across the walk bridge from the new "Solsiden" (translates to Sunny Side) part of town. The area feels safe and comfortable, and Sunny Side has a shopping center and several restaurants with outdoor seating.

The hotel reception is bright and modern, while the rest of the hotel feels quite 90ies despite being built in 2003. I booked a superior room and was surprised to see how small and dark it was - nothing like room they show on the hotel website. Yes, there was some water view - through a small window that faced the rooms in the next wing of the hotel. The room decor was in the yellow/red/blue theme so typical of the 90ies and the lightning was inadequate.

The bed was very comfortable to me, with a medium-to-soft mattress and good support for the back. Note that I am a medium size woman. I suspect a large or overweight person may find the beds a little too soft. Sound proofing was not the best, I ended up using ear plugs to block the TV noise from the next room.

The room and the bathroom looked very clean, even the carpet floor was spotless. I am not too fond of wall-to-wall carpet floors, but this one was okay. The bathroom had a nice heated tile floor and a temperature regulator that lets you choose how warm you want it. There was the standard Rica soaps, shampoo etc. which are of reasonably good quality and can be safely used if you forget to bring your own.

One lightbulb in the room was out and in the morning I asked in the reception to have it replaced. That did not happen. Otherwise, service was okay.

The breakfast opens at 7 o'clock, which is a bit late for a business hotel in Norway. There was a queue waiting for the breakfast restaurant to open and it got quite crowded. No wonder - this is not a breakfast to miss! The hotel has won the price for Norway's best hotel breakfast several years in a row now, and I'd say they deserve it. It is a giant breakfast buffet with all kinds of cold cuts, cheeses, fruits and veggies, egg & bacon, meatballs, fish cakes, salmon, small sausages, an omelet station, yogurt, smoothies... and of course all the baked goods for those who eat that, with several kinds of fresh breads, buns, rolls, croissants, carrot cake and so on. Only the coffee was just ordinary, and I had to ask for full-fat milk for my coffee.

I will probably stay here again next time I go to Trondheim, but I will not bother to book a superior room.

Great location just two blocks from the train station and across a short bridge to the historic old city. Easily walked to all main attractions. Hotel service was efficient and the breakfast service was simply amazing (fresh-squeezed juice) and a bounty of choices. Room was a little small by US standards.

Great staff - friendly and helpful. . Ideal location on the river and near lots of good restaurants. You can walk to anything in downtown Trondheim. My room was very quiet. Free internet was a plus and worked well. Airport bus stops nearby at the train station - 100 NOK vs. 700 NOK for a taxi. And, of course, everyone knows about the hotel's amazing breakfast. I will definitely stay here again if I return to Trondheim.

My only recommendation would be that they extend the hours for the gym (doesn't open until 7 am) and add some equipment.

It was an ok hotel. Ok service, and nice room. I had a superior room. All superior rooms have views to the river.
I came during the jazz festival, so had quite a bit of noise, which could be heard in the room.
If you want a hotel with a proper gym, then go to hotel britannia instead.
Breakfest was ok, very very crowded. If you left your table to get another round of food, then you would have to find a new table, as it would be taken by someone else.

When I am out and about travelling, I usually try to sleep as much as possible. Not during this stay though. Not because the beds were bad, they were lovely. Not because I woke up due to noise, because the soundproofing worked very well. I did not hear a sound from the hallway and neither from the policestation across the road.
What made me change my regime, was the fantastic breakfast. They have their own barista who prepares any coffee you might like. They had a man who prepared small energyshots from fresh fruit. They also had staff who prepared omelettes, fish, sausages etc in the brakfast area. I am still dreaming of the hour(s!) spent enjoying this fab breakfast.

In addition staff seemed very proud to work at the hotel and they did their uttermost to make me feel welcome. Next time I'll bring the family along.
