Owner description: Nidaros Cathedral is the national sanctuary of Norway. Work began in 1070, and the building was completed in about 1300. After being damaged by fire, it lay largely in ruins for several hundred years. In 1869 extensive restorations were begun, and a century later the cathedral was again restored to its original grandeur.

“Take the free guided tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2013

We visited this beautiful Cathedral with its amazing stained glass windows on a cold day in May. We had to wait to go in as a confirmation service was being held and tourists were not allowed entrance. All the congregation turned up in national dress and we watched them parade into the building. There were lots of other sites to see in the area, the old town 5 minutes walk away, the fortress on the hillside, as well as the Archbishop's Palace adjacent to the Church. We bought the combined ticket which gave entry to several other museums, well worth it. The free guided tours are in different languages and they tell you the time of the English one when you buy your ticket.

“Rich history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2013

The art on the outside of the structure is amazing especially when you consider the age and history. The hours to enter the the cathedral are limited so check before arriving if you want to enter. Beuatiful grounds and history worth investigating!

“Lovely Cathedral”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2013

Trondheim is a likeable city especially on a sunny day and its a nice walk from the Hurtigruten terminal to the centre - about 20 minutes - the cathedral is set in a quiet part of town near the river. The spire is reminiscent of Lincoln and the rose window reminiscent of York and therefore is a traditional cathedral well worth a visit. Check out the crypt which has a collection of grave/tomb stones that are up to 600 years old - sounds dull, but acually pretty interesting. You can take an English-speaking tour of the church and thats included in the entry fee which was reasonable (approx €10 i think). Around the back you have the Archbishops house and a walk around the river with some great views.

“Spectacular”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2013

Clear signs of pre-Lutheran inspiration, and much more of a view than most Norwegian cathedrals. Rose-window is spectacular. Organ under maintenance. Really good service and information from several of the volunteers positioned within the cathedral. Most enjoyable.

“A jewel for contemplation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2013

Unlike cathedrals of southern Europe, the Nidaros cathedral is not a place that impresses by an abundance of wealth, but by its simplicity. This simplicity makes the cathedral a jewel for contemplation.
The history of the cathedral is fascinating. In the Middle Age, it was an important centre of pilgrimage. And after centuries of decline following the reform, its restoration started in 1867. The restoration, or rather reconstruction, would not have been possible without a growing national sentiment in Norway that mobilised people for this wondrous work.
Note: free admission for meditation accompanied by an organ concert every Saturday at 13:30 (duration 30 min). Also, on Monday, Tuesday and Friday in summer, free organ concert at 13:00.
