“Once upon a time...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

This is "The Grand Hotel" in Trondheim, or it used to be.
Once upon a time this must have been a great hotel, but now it is not.
The only upside we found was the size of the room. That was great!

The hotel is desperately in need of refurbishing.
Too bad, because this hotel still have the potential to be great.

Located in the old city center, Britannia is one of the oldest hotels distinguished by original facade, the most beautiful in Trondhaim.

The elegantly furnished rooms are equipped with comfortable furniture.
Every room in the expected set of towels, terry bathrobes and slippers for use of inviting spa area in the basement.

Using the SPA unforgettable impression, just the object is beautiful, provides a wonderful relaxing and stayed in it longer every day from 7 in the morning and again in the evening.
We plan to again stay at this hotel to once again be able to enjoy this attraction.

A rich buffet breakfast is served every morning in a decorative room Palmehaven.
Jonathans Restaurant serves a fine Norwegian specialties and in the evening it is difficult to find a place in it.
About 200 meters is located Trondheim main attraction - the famous Nidaros Cathedral with museum objects - the traditional place of coronation of the Norwegian kings.

Stayed at the hotel during a short business trip to Trondheim. The hotel is in a good location in the center, near restaurants, shopping and sights. It is a grand old hotel that has clearly seen some interesting times and events. The old decorations and feel have been preserved, but it seems that the standards have not been preserved as well.
The room I got was very small and it needed updating. The style of the room was fine - classic and fitting with the hotel - but it was worn and lacking in comfort. For example, there was no place to put the bag other than on top of a table. The bed was small and not comfortable, making for a less than restful night. The bathroom had been updated, but it was really small and as a consequence there was no shower stall, just a single door that served to shield one corner of the bathroom, while the rest got wet. I expect that from a low-cost compact hotel, but it is far from what one would expect from a hotel like this one.
The service at the hotel was okay, but mostly limited to the minimum effort needed and decidedly lacking in a spirit of welcoming guests. The one exception is staff at the desk having some coffee and orange juice in the lobby when I was leaving for the airport before breakfast service started. I appreciated that.
Overall, it was a real disappointment to find this grand hotel offering accommodations below average and service that was just average.

I stayed at the hotel for a conference. The staff were helpful and friendly, and when I asked for a razor and a toothbrush it was promptly brought to my room. Great breakfast and lunch, and nice touch with chefs and live piano music. The main areas are nice and old and sets you back to the grandeur of old times. The room was nice too, but could do with some maintenance.

Apparently this hotel was built for the British going to this part of Norway for fly-fishing and its style certainly reflects this. The architure and decor is stunning, the rooms comfortable and the staff helpful, particularly when you have misread the times of the airport bus and need a taxi in a hurry!

OK hotel, rooms were pretty good, unfortunately we stayed there at the same time as there was some filming going on in some parts of the hotel. This caused several problems, including the film crew making a lot of noise all night. The staff didnt seem to care too much about this though. As a result of the filming, the breakfast was moved into a conference area, the buffet was lined up on some tables in the hall area and the tables in a conference room, far from ideal. If all these things would have been informed up front, things might have been different, but they weren't so I was not very impressed. They also had very few car parking spaces available in the basement, but these were extremely tight. You need precision driving skills to be able to squeeze in there.

We stayed at the hotel over the New Year''s holiday, and also had a family function in the Salon Area of the widely renowned and respectable Palmehaven restaurant, and we simply loved it. The staff, the venue, the hotel's personnel - everything just perfect. The hotel is an old and historic establishment, and while time does show here and there, it is an overall very well kept and cherished property. I can absolutely recommend - for business, pleasure of special events.

Room Tip: A street view room is outstanding - but any room is great here.
