“Average City Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2011

This hotel is located right in the the city centre of Kristiansand, next to the church.

The room was quite small with a small bathroom. Stayed in room 209.
A bit dissapointed that the TV does not have all the norwegian channels, and there is no mini bar. Just a nespresso machine.

Internet access is fast, 19Mbit pr. second download speed. (tested with speedtest)

Not easy to get parking. There is just parking spaces for 5-6 cars in the back yard, and it cost 90kr pr. night. You can also park in the street, but then you have to move youre car at 08:00 in the morning.

Payed 850kr pr. night.

We stayed for 2 nights at Thon Wergeland. Reception is friendly and is a one woman (we only saw 2 ladies during our stay) wonder who does the reception, cleaning of the lobby at night and waitressing at breakfast the next morning....still with a smile.

We stayed in room 215, the double room with the sofa used as a second bed for our child. Judging by the floor plan behind the door, that's bigger than most rooms. There's a small wardrobe with an umbrella, a desk with a new office swivel chair and a 42" (?) flat screen on the wall. Furnishings are new and beds were comfortable.

We got really excited with the Nespresso machine on the desk, only to find that it didn't work and had water left in the tray. Someone before us had also tried to use it and we found the cartridge unused inside the machine. Would be great if it was workable, and was cleaned after the last occupant. Reception was informed but she did not seem to know what to do. No biggie here. There's free coffee and tea in the lobby anyways.

This is a hotel geared towards the business traveller. There's a carpark which is chargable but there are only 6 lots available in the space shared with garbage bins and another office.

Restaurant serves great food with good service but is also expensive compared to restaurants outside, like Egon's.

We used the free WIFI and it worked absolutely perfectly with our laptop. There is a desktop for guestuse in the lobby as well.

The past reviews of this hotel are pretty old, and much has changed. I stayed there two nights for business, and pictures of my room confirms that the furniture at least have been replaced, along with the bathroom which also has renewed. I have in mind a reviewer that complained on the interior.

True, the building itself is old, and the windows are pretty much ready for replacement.

All in all the hotel and staff was ok, but not more than that. It is definitely not a 1 star hotel, as Tripadvisor rates it. An ok 3 star is a more accurate rating.

The location of the hotel is perfect. Right in the center of the city of Kristiansand. Breakfast is in the hotels Restaurant and is fine. Today's newspapers available while you eat.

The bad: The Internet is just horrible, and NOT reliable at all. I could not work with the connection, as it was on and off all the time. When you are on an business trip, this a thing you need.

I believe the reason for the bad internet connection was because it was not secured! And located in the middle of the city, with lots of building around, I can just imagine how many neighbors "borrows" the line as well... I tipped them about it. I will not stay there again until they have fixed it. They had a machine on a fixed line in the reception, for fast e-mail checking for toursists.

To conclude: If you on leisure, and do not plan to be in your room to do work, the location makes it a perfect choice. On business; pick a hotel with working internet connection.

I stayed here for one night in December 2005 on the first night on land of a short touring holiday also taking in Oslo, Stockholm, a night on the Baltic sea, Helsinki and Tampere. I checked in very early after getting off the overnight ferry from Newcastle at about 7:30 and the staff, who spoke excellent English, managed to get a room ready for me in the 20 minutes it took me to get back from a walk down to the train station and get my ticket for the next days journey to Oslo so good service there.

The hotel is very well located near the cathedral so it was very easy to find my way back after walking around town. It's inside an old house so there's no elevator and the lobby is fairly small but the room I had was a fairly decent size for such a building and included a rather comfy double bed and a small sitting area with a 2 seater sofa instead of the usual chair. The bathroom was a nice surprise, a very clean and functional modern Scandinavian-style affair with surprisingly high quality fittings and a walk-in shower that's a lot nicer to use than most.

I didn't eat at the hotel, which seems to be attatched to some kind of eating establishment that breakfast is served in, and there was no room service that I can recall but there was a minibar in the room and an abundance of places to eat around the hotel.

I booked direct with the hotel using the Skanplus card, (well worth it, the cost of the card was covered several times over by the saving), discount and the rate was fairly reasonable for a hotel like this. A perfectly agreeable hotel for its price and status, definitely not a big American chain style hotel so look elsewhere if that's what you want.

We stayed overnight at this beautiful town on the south coast of Norway. The neighbourhood is quite nice but the Hotel Wergeland is a complete disaster. We got exactly the room shown on the website, but the difference is that the furnitures are outdated and used. The room was dusty and there were electric & TV cables running all around the room without beadwork. There is no lift but just a dirty staircase so good luck for the luggages if you are on the top floor.

Breakfast was ok but served in the hotel restaurant who provides dinner service as a stand-alone restaurant. We were the first to arrive in the morning and there were still bread crumbs from the diner on the floor.

No clerk was there for the checkout (it was a Sunday morning). So the breakfast attendant helped us to do it. I wanted to get credit for an airline milage card, the breakfast attendant (kind of part-time job student) didn't really understand but prentended to do so and refused even to note down the card number. I had to give up as people were queuing up behind me for the check out.

This is the most expensive hotel we paid during our two-week trip in Norway, however, there was no return neither for the equipment nor for the service. What a disappointing experience!
