“Pretty good hostel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

Anker Hostel is one of the cheapest places to stay in Oslo, so you can't expect luxury, and the place is good for the price.

The location is close to the city centre, and so it's a good base for exploring, and only 10 minutes walk from the train station and bus terminal when arriving or leaving. Thanks to the location, I didn't need to use any public transportation to get around - most of the attractions are about 15-20 minutes walk away, and Oslo is small enough to walk pretty much everywhere.

I stayed in an 8 bed dorm, which was never full on any nights, possibly due to the time of year. The dorms have an ensuite bathroom with shower, basin and toilet. The beds in the rooms are comfortable, though linen is not included and costs extra.

There is free wi-fi in the reception area (sometimes I could pick it up in the dorm as well), with ample room on the sofas and tables for a good number of people. The reception also supplies hot and cold drinks, as well as any help and information. When my padlock broke on my suitcase, the staff quickly helped out by finding the security to break open the padlock

Before arriving I was worried about heating, seeing as Oslo in January can be very cold, but inside the hostel was always warm - reception area and dorms alike.

Overall, Anker Hostel is a good place to stay on a budget, with decent rooms, helpful staff, and good location, at a much nicer price than other places in Oslo.

The place is ugly and sterile. People that are working there are dull and lifeless.
There is no WI FI in rooms. They are charging extra for everything including linen.
One day I didnt have 100 NOK but 70 and they didn't want to lend me dishes.
They made me go to the exchange office.
The toilet was broken and they didn't fix it for 6 days so I had to poop in restorans.
Anyway, really bad choice.
I would never choose this place again. Even if it was half price.

The Anker is an ok hostel, I've stayed in much better and much worse places. The rooms are big enough and have cooking facilities. The female staff were very nice, but the men were slightly rude. It's in a good location, directly across the street from a tram stop, and that's the best thing going for it. If you just want a bed to sleep in then the Anker will suit you.

Although the Anker Hostel was clean and the rooms had their own bathroom and kitchen, the atmosphere of the hostel was very boring and empty. The common area was comprised only of sofas and coffee tables, which was not very conducive to mingling or meeting people. There were no decorations and virtually no character to the place, which made it feel like a cheap hotel as opposed to a hostel. You have to pay for your linen as well, but I would recommend skipping that, as each bed still has a warm blanket that is sufficient. The prices were decent for Oslo (about 220-240NOK/night), but still a bit pricey for this hostel. Also, the staff members were very dry and reserved - no character or enthusiasm in any of them (much like the building itself).

Anker Hostel is sufficient if you strictly need a bed and bathroom - but if you're looking to meet people and stay in a fun environment, find some place else.

Five of us rented a room together to stay here for one night. The hostel was very clean and the room spacious. The room also included a small kitchen area and a table which was very convenient for socialising. The check-in process was relatively fast and the staff were happy to refund extra linen I paid for but realised I didn't need without any fuss. The hostel is about 15 minutes walk from the town centre. On the negative side, the toilet was very small and was a full wet-room with no place to put any objects. There were also only two power outlets in the whole room designed for 8 people. Also, the communal areas downstairs doesn't have much of an atmosphere. Having experienced both better and far worse hostels around the world, overall I would consider this hostel quite average.

I stayed here for four nights while visiting Oslo. As hostels go it's about what you can hope for. It's pretty clean, in a good area, reasonably priced. The beds were comfortable as well. The common area has internet access, and as a result is always crowded with people using the web - so getting a seat down there can be tough. You can buy tickets for breakfast from the place next door, which is a pretty standard European breakfast - breakfast sandwich spreads and bread, yogurt, juice. It may seem expensive for the food offered, but that's just how Oslo is. The location is great, within walking distance of the central station - from which you can get to anything in the city. Public transit in Oslo is great in general, and being so close to the central station was a definite bonus. There were some good bars and restaurants within decent walking distance as well. If you're traveling on a budget I'd definitely recommend this hostel.
