“Cold rooms, excellent service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

This hotel is located close to the Vippetangen harbor, which is where some boats arrive from other countries and also where the small ferries to the small islands in the Oslo fjord go from, which is nice for sightseeing on the islands. It's also about a 5-minute walk to the Central Station. The staff is very friendly, helpful and service-minded. Another plus is that they serve not just breakfast, but also lunch and dinner included in the price, which was very helpful for me. I think my room was very cold. I tried tweaking the thermostat, but it didn't seem to have an impact. I never contacted the staff about this though. They might've had a solution for me. Also, both regular phone reception (for cell phones) and 3G (mobile data) reception was very bad in my room, so I had to rely on the hotel's wifi to use the Internet. Wifi is also included in the hotel room so that wasn't much of a problem, but the Internet service they provide is delivered by Telenor that requires a conference code each time you log in. That would be nice if it were only for logging in once a day or something like that, but I had to log in almost every single time I turned on the screen on my phone, even after just being 5 minutes idle. This was a slight annoyance. The bed was comfortable and there was an option to elevate your back etc., which was very helpful at times. All in all a good experience with the hotel though and recommend it to everyone.

We walked past the red light district and Salvation Army to find this place and were worried! It turned out to be unnecessary. We were greater by friendly staff who were great with our kids aged 7 and 2 we got a free upgrade to a large family room with interconnecting child's room. We received breakfast, afternoon pancakes and an evening meal included in the price (drinks extra) but we didn't Ming paying for hotel wine when everything else was such good value. By comparison we could not even get a Burger King dinner for our family for less than £35 in Oslo. Excellent value in an overpriced city. Would recommend

Rooms are crasy small. In the bathroom jast a soap even mini bar is emty- no water, no beer, no juice nothing. Feels like you are in 3 stars hotel. Most terrible it is kitchen. If you are not norvegian and don,t like broun cheese or pancaces with jam then it is nothing to eat. Dirty plates in restoran feels that they are washing dishes by hands. Muslim cook making food with indian spices, omlet from pulver. In the lounge 4 kinds of spagetti salads (cold spagetti) without salt, peper jast something inside. Even if you are very hungry better to go and eat in sushi bar next street. In Italy from the same products you can get delicacyes. I think that in this hotel administration should remember that it is not only scandinavian people coming to Oslo. Very poor

Was in Oslo for 1 night on business. Found this hotel using Hotwire so got a great rate given the high prices in this city. My room was extremely small with a tiny bathroom, but it was spotlessly clean and very peaceful. Didn't eat here but walked into the town centre.

The area is a bit run down, with a hostel nearby and other late night people hanging around.

I have stayed at the Bastion Hotel in Oslo many times for my monthly business trips. I have always felt welcome and comfortable at the hotel. The staff are fantastic and the best part is that instead of having to trawl around looking for a restaurant or sitting in a formal hotel restaurant waiting, you can just wander down to the cosy restaurant at any time between 6 and 9 and eat the dinner buffet (this is included in the room price).

I have often taken food back to my room for a TV dinner - this really makes a big difference to my being away from home and is so much more relaxing than many other 'fine' hotels where you sit in boredom alone, waiting for a waiter/the dinner/the bill etc.

Another simple but important thing - you can switch off the aircon in the rooms!

It only takes 5-7 minutes to walk from the central station in Oslo to the hotel.

If you book early on the hotel website the prices are very reasonable.

I chose this hotel due to its proximity to the sea-port before my morning trip by the ferry to Denmark. This hotel offered the room option with the evening meal, which I considered as the essential advantage worth extra money, especially after the long travel to Oslo by the airplane and train. However, the hotel doesn't provide any information neither in the booking confirmation, neither in its website that this option is only available until 9:00 PM, so the guests must arrive at least at 8:30 PM. A quite interesting approach of the hotel staff... The guests pay for the service in advance (for the evening meal) when make the booking, but will not receive any if arrive after 9:00 PM, about which nobody bothers to inform.
I arrived at 8:45 PM, and was told by the reception staff to go immediately to the dinner (even without leaving my luggage in the room!), otherwise I will not receive any. The reception lady was very unfriendly and arrogant.
Despite of such awful behaviour of the reception staff, the offered evening meal was tasteful, and the dining area was nice and cozy, with the fireplace.
The hotel is located in a shabby area, and itself is really old and worn. Actually this old building doesn't suite for the purpose of the hotel at all: the narrow corridors, the unbelievable slow and worn elevator, dark and gloomy rooms. In my opinion, the smartest solution would be to demolish such worn building, and to construct the new and modern one instead of it.
I was given the room, in which the heating system was completely out of order. The temperature in the room was 15 degrees Celsius! After my complain the girl from the staff brought to the room the electric heater, which looked as delivered from the stone age, and nothing strange that it didn't work.
Finally they changed my room to another, in which the heating system was working properly. The room itself was spacious, however, very gloomy, with a very small window, and the walls decorated in so dark grey color (almost black), which may fit only in the mortuary undertaking. All furniture was very old-fashioned, obviously from the 19th century. The bathroom had no doors (!) The strange understanding, indeed...
Luckily I had to stay only one night in this hotel. When I checked-out in the morning, the reception shift was changed, and the gentleman was very kind and polite. In the contrary to this arrogant lady, he communicated very friendly, he booked me a taxi, and only his courteous approach slightly improved the overall negative impressions of this hotel.
Of course, I can not recommend this hotel in any case.
