“A hotel with hostel style rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2010

Perminalen was excellent value in such an expensive city and the location was convenient for walking around the city centre, the station and the harbour for boats out to some of the museums.

Rooms were spacious, clean, the most comfortable beds I've slept in in a hostel, with ensuite bathrooms and a locker area. I was in a single sex 6-bed dorm for 3 nights.

Staff were very helpful and spoke excellent English, buffet style breakfast of cereals, toast, meat, cheese, boiled eggs etc is included and it's worth filling up on this as eating out is very very expensive. Nice TV lounge with satellite TV, free wifi or 'pay as you go' internet terminals if you don't have a laptop.

I would definitely stay here again.

We found this hostel to be in an ideal location for our visit to Oslo. Only a few minutes walk from city centre, and equally near the harbour, this is a very reasonably priced hostel, especially when considering the expense of the city! Breakfast included is a very welcome bonus, and make sure you feed yourself up for the day ahead... you will pay up to £20 for a burger in town later!! Room was clean, warm and we had our own bathroom. Staff were helpful and the common room is a cosy place to chill out after a hard days exploring. There was a nightclub to the rear which got noisy throughout the night, which may be a consideration for others, but we all managed a good sleep and so would not put me off returning.
A beautiful city, well worth seeing and there is a great wee kebab shop just round the corner from Perminalen for a well deserved feed!

Perminalen was great to stay at, particularly in such an expensive city! The staff were extremely friendly and were eager to point you in the right direction. Breakfast was great, free wireless, and the rooms were so clean you could eat off the floor.

The only complaint I have is that there's a club across the street which gets extremely noisy in the evenings! However, close the window, perhaps bring some earplugs in case you end up with a room that faces Ovre Slottsgate.

Do not let the name of this hotel make you think that its really a hotel, as at the end of teh day its just an up-market Hostel.

Not to say that is a bad thing, but in Oslo where every penny counts (£17 for two Burger Kings meals!!!!) that place is really great!

The location of this hotel is great, as its just 2 seconds off Karl Johansgaten (main street in Oslo) and less than 5 minutes walk to the train station.

We arrived at 7pm, and as soon as we walk through the door we were greeted from the staff who took no time to get us checked in.

Rooms are VERY basic (just a bed, desk and cupboards... but NO tv) with a shower and toilet room.... main thing was that they were very clean.

Breakfast was nothing special... hard or soft boiled egg, cheese and ham, juice and tea/coffee.

All in all, this hotel was booked for its price and location (£75 a night) and was not needed for anything else on our trip to Oslo.

We chose this hotel based on TA reviews and stayed for 3 nights in June. We were not disappointed either by our first night in a bunk room or two nights in a twin room as knew it was low budget by norwegian standards. The hotel appears clean and well-run with courteous reception staff. The included scandinavian buffet breakfast was absolutely fine. It is a utilitarian style hostel rather than hotel so has an institutional feel. However central city location is excellent as is just off the main drag and walking distance to all major sights. The only drawback is noisy crowds out on the street at bar closing time of 3am so earplugs essential.

The cleanest, nicest, and of course most expensive hostel in which I have stayed. Beds were very comfortable with clean, nice linens. En suite bathroom was large and shower had good pressure and very hot water all the time. Breakfast was included and was very good, with meats, cheeses, bread, fruit, coffee, and juice available. For a small charge, they will let you pack sandwiches for later in the day which will save you a considerable amount of money since Oslo is quite possibly the most expensive city on the planet. Location was excellent - one block from the metro and a tram stop and within walking distance of the harbor and city center. Staff was very cordial and helpful.

My mom and I stayed at the Perminalen on June 24-25 and July 1. It was the cheapest place we stayed during our Norway trip, and it also had the warmest and most helpful desk staff of any place we stayed. Others have mentioned all of the good things about this hotel/hostel: the location (close to the waterfront, shopping, and the train station), the fairly quiet street, the good buffet breakfast, and the cleanliness. But the thing that made our stay so nice was the way the front desk staff treated us. They answered our questions, gave us advice, and helped us out, all with smiles and warmth. They even had two free breakfast packs ready for us when we checked out at 3:45 am!
Yes, the rooms are spartan, the showers let water into the rest of the bathroom, and you have to bus your own table at breakfast, but if you care about saving money and staying in a place that makes you feel welcome, go to the Perminalen. You won't regret it.
