“The best example of Norwegian cuisine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

Before leaving for Oslo and after being on the waiting list for a month we were contacted with the question if we still were interested in dining at Maaemo, which is rarity considering they don't have a lot of cancellations. This establishment is tucked away from the main street which gives it a secluded feeling, which we enjoyed. The restaurant has only one menu, the seasonal menu, but if there are some dietary restrictions they will keep that into account. You also have the option to go for wine by the glass or choose the (non) alcoholic beverage menu, the latter is preferred. After being given some explanation about the menus the food followed. The actual service was very efficient and the courses followed each other very quickly. This resulted that the staff didn't have a lot of time to talk to you when you had any questions about the food, the wines or the restaurant. We did have a quick chat with one of the waiters before we left, but the again we were the last guests by that time. The food itself was a nice overview of Norwegian cuisine. We did however miss a second meat course of some sorts. The meal did end with some light sorbets and desserts, but for the real wow factor you expect in these type of restaurants, we had to wait for the very last dessert.
Overall it was worth the visit, but it was a bit on the expensive side at the end of the day at €290 per head.

“Mixed feelings.....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2013

I was really excited about this dining experience, I am travelling worldwide and visiting the so called Gourmet Temples whereever I am. Well, I really love the Scandinavian kitchen and also ready to eat more sophisticated and close to nature dishes. I ate deep fried moose in Noma and many other interesting things in other famous nordic places. Some of the dishes from around 15 small courses were really tasty and interesting. I really missed at least one real piece of fish or meat. The main course was actually the fresh baked bread - delicious - with butter. Very nordic.....Unfortunately i expect more than that for more than US 300/ person without drinks. I am still not sure if I liked it or not. The service was very good and professional. The restaurant was not easy to find, please get around the huge builduing and look for the modern part of it.

“Worth the price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

We saved the best for last in our trip to Norway. Our dinner at Maaemo was truly a memorable dining experience with course after course of wonderful bites. In particular, we loved the gigantic langoustines (as big as small lobsters) smoked in pine, the fresh baked bread with butter, cucumber sorbet (tastes better than it sounds). I also thought the service was excellent - very efficient and professional, but friendly. Surprisingly, most of the wait-staff was not Norwegian, with an Italian, Frenchman, and even a dude from LA, all of whom spoke excellent English. The only knock is that it's a bit inaccessible, because it's in an office complex off the main road and requires a walk up a daunting set of stairs, which was a bit of a challenge for my 82-year old mother in law. And the price - our dinner was more expensive than our two night hotel stay. But you do get a lot of food over the course of the meal - well over 20 individual courses. Also, be prepared to clear your evening - we came in for a 7:30 reservation and didn't leave until 11:15.

“The negation of gastronomy”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2013

How can a presumed best class restaurant treat so terribly its clients ? The dramatically cold service was not able to offer us anything, everybody being locked in this academical process. Sorry but eating is not a pain for me !

“A sensual experience in the world of food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

Wow! 26 beautiful, stunning courses (16 appetizers and sweets)! Ten different wines, including two kind of beers and one cider. Champagne before it all started.
What an awesome meal, served in the most spectacular, amasing and wonderful way. Impossible to describe. And the tastes from this ecoligical, local food; heavenly! Terrific service! Five hours in heavenly enjoyment.
