“never again, unless things change!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

Cramped room with the bed wedged under a sloping ceiling with no room either side to get in or out so you had to crawl up from the foot end, taking care not to hit your head! Shower in the room with clear glass door so you'd be a spectator sport for your roomie, tiny toilet which anyone over 5'5 would have to sit on sideways as there was so little leg room. A kettle, but no mugs and no access to teabags or milk as everything in the kitchen was padlocked, but a fridge and basket full of drinks and snacks at exorbitant prices. It was hot and stuffy in the room so difficult to sleep. Breakfast was extra and served in the kitchen where there was a table seating 6 people and a bar for 3. Everyone else had to eat outside wrapped up in coats and scarves. Not my idea of breakfast!
They gave us no information about how to get there from the station so we had to take a taxi, but going back we found a tram right outside that went straight there. We were due to stay there again before leaving Norway but cancelled as we had had such a disappointing stay.

Norway is expensive but this place is great value - about £80 a night for a lovely double room in a lovely traditional villa-style townhouse - high ceilings, large open windows, wooden floors and traditional furnishings - far removed from modern chain as you can get. It's a 15 min walk from the town centre but in a lovely part of town with a nearby street full of great places to eat, and not far from the famous sculpture park. Right on a tram line too but Oslo small enough to walk everywhere. Take self-service breakfast in the lovely communal dining / living room or out in the garden. This is one of the nicest places I have stayed anywhere. Ask for a room on the top floor - bigger and quieter.

We had 2 nights here and had a comfortable and pleasant stay. The room was clean, beds super comfy and the decor stylish.
Staff were friendly and I would recommend that you pay for the breakfast because eating out is so expensive in Norway.
Location is very central and not too far from city centre and Vigeland park. Lots of cafes ad restaurants nearby.
For a small fee you can get wifi, but in this day and age I think it should be free.
Overall it was a great place for the price.

Great location, tram stop almost at the front door. Down side, tram doesn't stop until midnight, so if its warm and you need the window open to keep cool, all you hear is traffic. The suggestion that I made to the staff was to get block out curtains in the rooms too - sun goes down around midnight then rises again about 4am. Hostel prices, but very clean, sheets/pillow/duvet supplied. I had a double room (2 single beds pushed together) then a single room. Both rooms had tv, kettle & bar fridge. Shared toilet/showers in the hall for most rooms.Staff are awesome! Breakfast was a fee, wifi was a fee, mini bar in the room, also with a fee. 7-eleven was close by to buy food/tickets etc, as well as several restaurants. A short walk to the palace, Oslo central and other attractions. There is a lovely garden to sit in also, although the reception shuts at 1800, so does the garden door, but it is accessable via a gate.

Positive points: friendly staff, there are supermarkets near, there is a small refrigerator in the room. Quiet neighborhood and hotel. Reasonable price to expensive Oslo.
Negative points: there isn’t a remote control for the TV, no free wifi , not so close to central train station (30 min by foot).
In general is a very good place to stay in Oslo, with good cost-benefit relation in a expensive city.

Enjoyed my one night stay at this simple but cosy B&B in the leafy Uranienborg area of Oslo.
It located in a lovely leafy street, behind the palace park, in one of the prettiest areas of Oslo. Loved the location - central but not right in the middle of things - it is about 10 mins walk to very centre, and about 20 mins walk to Central Station - but the walk is lovely.
I stayed in a single room with shared bathroom. The facilities were not amazing but perfectly fine, and I loved the view form my room over the garden. There were lots of lovely little touches, like cosy blankets, an arm chair, and flowers on the window sill. The service was the same - not amazing but simple and perfectly fine. Lots of lovely common areas to relax - an indoor sofa area and a garden deck. Breakfast and internet costs extra.

Room Tip: On the garden side, rather than the road side, where the trams trundle by.

Ellingsens Pensjonat is in a great location in a lovely part of Oslo. A ten minute walk to the Frogner Park and lots of lovely cafes and shops within a five minute walk. Basically you get a room to stay the night and that's it - you have to pay extra for breakfast, internet etc though I didn't mind this given how cheap the single room with shared bathroom rate is. The bathrooms could definitely use a refurb so if you are the kind of person who needs a very modern, up-to-date shower and toilet then this is not the place for you. That being said my room was perfectly comfortable and the style of the Pensjonat is quite nice, Scandinavian in design. My tips to the owners and managers would be: update the bathrooms, offer an honesty bar or equivalent for after staff have left, and do not lock the door to the garden when people might want to sit outside after the staff have gone home!
