“Nice Hotel, great position”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2013

Charming service and nice rooms right in the centre of Oslo, across from the Theatre and a short walk to the boat for the museums area, another short walk to shopping and the rail station. great breakfast and comfortable sleep. Main dining room shut but bar food was ok.

In 14 hours we saw the worst and best aspects of the centrally located Hotel Continental, Oslo. On arrival the Lobby and Bar were old European in a good way. We first were given room 515 which appeared clean and newly furnished. Oslo was on the edge of the European heat wave so you needed to open the windows with minimal air conditioning. More like a very low fan not cold. On arrival you could hear a saxophone blaring, but at night the street below became packed with cars, clubbers and loud music. We couldn't close the windows and in essence we were sleeping on the street. By midnight I could take it no longer and moved to the lobby. I told them I would remain there until they found me a quiet room. They obliged by finding an upgraded room and a fan. The newly upgraded room 532 had double sinks, a walk-in shower with upgraded bath, toilet and bidet. Americans don't usually get that. I helped move my own bags, but by 12:30 AM was able to get some sleep with an alley across the way. Now the buffet breakfast was probably the best and most extensive on my tour of Scandinavia. Four herrings, smoked white fish and salmon aside from the American favorites. With more knowledge, I might stay again. But this is city living no matter what. I think more money will buy quiet.

Room Tip: Look for the high number rooms on high floors and always ask to see the room before staying

We stayed in this hotel twice on our recent visit to Norway.

For our first stay we were on the 7th floor facing the side street. Its true that this street can be noisy but we closed the window before we went to bed and that was sufficient to keep the noise out.

Our room wasn't large but was perfectly adequate. Molton Brown toiletries in the bathroom and complementary slippers were provided which was a nice touch.

There are no tea making facilities in the rooms but if you ask at reception they are more than happy to bring a kettle and cups and saucers to your room.

For our second visit to the hotel 10 days later we were delighted to find we had been upgraded to a superior room on the 8th floor. This room was a delight, very large with a lounge area and a hugh bathroom with twin basins and even had its own balcony overlooking the street.

On both our stays the breakfast buffet was very good.

Highly recommended.

Had a good time at this hotel. Nice room, although a little small. Nicely decorated rooms as well as the lobby. One shouldn't miss breakfast - delicious. Attentious and efficient staff. This hotel is wonderfully located in the heart of the city, near restaurants and shops.

Room Tip: Sorr, can't remember a specific one...

The hotel's location is fantastically central, as many reviewers point out. The (Edvard) Munch Bar is a pleasant rendez-vous spot: a glass of juice may be $7, but there are actual Munchs hanging on the walls... The front desk staff are capable and friendly. I'd stay there again.

My updated room was small but tastefully done, and had good lighting - an amenity that's nearly extinct! The wi-fi worked, and there was an iron, but no coffee-making facilities.

The bed and bedding were supremely comfortable, and wonderful to drift off in once a thumping disco beat stopped at 1 a.m. I'd also prefer it if hotels didn't place decorative cushions (inevitably none too clean) atop pristine bedding! Continental, please take note.

Ask for a quiet room - and for a Nespresso machine. Perhaps they'll get the point.

The location in Oslo Could not be better. Very easy to acces from the airport, within walking distances from most of the attactions of the city. The hotel is more than 100 years old and some of the furnitures seems to be as old too. I amd writing this by a desk where the chair is quite too low and it would not be comfortable to work longer time by the computer. What surprices me most that all our windows are covered with film that make them opaque. Not very nice that you can not look out. No possibility to make coffee or tea at the room. You can of course order it at the room service but as everything else in Norway, it is very expensive. I would expect these facilities available at a 5 star de luxe room. There is a saftety box but not big enough to put a lap top in. I pad goes fine.
Conclusion: Great location but not one of the leading hotels of the world (I've tried them). 4 stars is the maximum I would give to this hotel.

The only 5 star in Oslo! A member of the leading hotels!

I have stayed in enough hotels to know that the 'sell by' date for this hotel was ten years ago.
It's a jaded old hotel which should be a 3 star hotel at half the prices.
Leading hotels should strip their membership.
We felt cheated.
The rooms were old,no tea/coffee facilities,no drinking water,no toiletries etc.
Best to avoid this hotel.we saw the thief hotel which looked v good indeed.
