“Nice place, but wasn't ecstatic”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2012

Hotel is a lengthy walk from the main train station coming in from airport (30 minutes away), but you can catch the underground (2 stops) and exit across the street at the Theater area. It is central to walk to the harbour, and up the hill to the main shopping streets (in 2 separate directions).

It is starting to look a bit on the tired side, but it still was a nice historic feel. Convenient good-quality Theatercafe (full restaurant, not a cafe) connected by a hallway.

Rooms were fine, historical feel. I knew what I was getting when I booked....if I wanted modern/chic, I would have chosen elsewhere.

I can't fault the service...even the staff in the hallways were friendly, accommodating and always asking if we needed anything. Breakfast was sizable but expected.

Oh dear. The last time I stayed at the Continental was 12 years ago. The hotel hasn't changed one bit. If some of the rooms have been modernised it certainly didn't apply to my room. The room - measuring 5m x4m - was tired. The bathroom was tiny, 30 years old and with the dreaded shower curtain. Aaa argh! First impressions not good.

Dinner was spent in the Theatrecafeen. Good but, as usual, expensive.

A nightcap in the bar. I sat in my antique chair and the arm fell off. Never mind. Decent wine list.

Oh well. I was only staying for 12 hours. So a good nights sleep? Not a chance. The mattress was a soft as a hammock. Oh dear.

Perhaps the morning would be better. Went to the gym. Actually fitness room with a treadmill, bike, cross trainer and a few machines. Not great.

I asked housekeeping to iron my shirt. This they did on an hour. Wonderful. Less wonderful was the USD30 bill for ironing. Oh dear.

Breakfast - average at best. USD30 more.

I am clearly spoilt, staying in too many Asian and Middle Eastern hotels. This was a wake up call. On the plus side the location was great and the service is very good. But that's about it for me.

Room Tip: Fly to Helsinki and stay at the Kamp!

One of the historical hote in Oslo, it enjoys a magnificant location. It is elegant but not impersonal as many business hotels. A good solution for both business and leisure. The Theatercafeen linked to the hotel offers good dinners in a stilish setting. The staff is helpful and friendly. Rooms are a bit old fashioned

Nice hotel. Great location, helpful service, charming old decor.

Rooms are small. However, the 24-hour gym is a smart touch.

Would've given it 4 stars but the price is astonishing for a small room in a small city. 3 stars it is.

Just back from a long weekend in oslo. We got a great deal at the Hotel Continental which was 3 nights for the price of two which made a big differance. When you arrive in Oslo Lufthaven Gardemon you can get a train direct from the airport to 2 mins walk around the corner. But make sure the train Stops at Nationaltheatre. The train we got didnt so had to walk from oslo s ....still only a 10-15 min walk.

Check in was really fast and the lady checking us in was really chatty and friendly ( probably helped that we were irish ) She showed us areas we should see in oslo while we were there. I had requested a newly renovated room. This was really nice, huge bed ,2 sinlge duvets which is a good addition!!! and ample room in there althought the bathroom was small but the shower was power full which made up for it.
At night, you could hear noise from the street but you kind of get over that. There was noise from what sounded like water pumps so any time any one used a tap or toilet this noise went off and it sounded like people were moving furniture around. This was only there on the first night.
Check out there was a bit of an issue. The receptionist tried charging us for items from the mini bar that the previous occupants had taken. This came to nearly €30 worth of items, So just be aware to check that every item on the mini bar list is there when you check in to avoid any delay checking out.

The hotel is really easy to reach from the airport, just a short walk from the national theatre train stop. Its possible to walk to most of the City sights from the hotel but if you want to use the tram, bus, metro or train all are very close to the hotel. Oslo is a beautiful city. The only negative thing about the trip was how expensive Oslo is.

Room Tip: We were very lucky and were upgraded to a junior suite which was lovely.

I've stayed at the Hotel Continental numerous times over the past 10 years and recently spent three nights in March 2012. The Hotel Continental will always be my preferred place to stay in Oslo and I much prefer it over the more contemporary chain hotels in the city. The hotel evokes very old world charm in a luxury manner. It originally opened in 1900 and looks and feels like it's been there forever. Over the years I've stayed at the hotel, the owners have constantly updated the rooms. While the standard rooms are not spacious, they are very comfortable and have sufficient room for a business traveller to conduct affairs. There are many positive aspects to this hotel. First, the location. The hotel is centrally located off the central business district but also across from the Royal Palace and an easy walk to the Aker Brygge retail shopping and restaurant district. An additional bonus is that the hotel is located across the street from the Nationaltheatre train station. The Flytoget airport express train is the best way to get from Oslo airport to the city. Another thing I love about the hotel is that there is always a buzz about the place. The bar off the lobby is always vibrant with a lot of activity; one gets the feeling that a lot of important business-social matters are discussed here. The Theatrecafeen restaurant, attached to the hotel, exudes the same kind of old world feel and charm as the hotel. I've always had the feeling that the restaurnant and the hotel is the most important venues for the business and social elites of Oslo. I love this place.
