We've just returned from a 2 night stay in Oslo. Stayed in the Thon Hotel Europa and found it to be very good. the room (703, a Superior room) was a bit stark at first, wood floor, grey washed walls, "70s" style chairs and contrasting walls. We soon got used to the Scandinavian decor and we liked the room. Our room was at the back- no view, but it was quiet. On the front you might hear the noise of trams.
The breakfast was very good, lots of choice. We didn't eat dinner in the restaurant as there were several restaurants close by. Beware, the restaurant and bar are closed on Sundays.
The location is great, close to Royal Palace, the main street, Karl Johan and is only a 20 mins walk from the station along a pedestian street. If we are in Oslo again we'll definitely come to this hotel again.
A word of warning, Oslo is expensive!!! We had a snack lunch in a bar at Aker Brygge by the harbour (2 x 0.5l beers, a club sandwich and chicken mayo open sandwich was 300 kroner which at today's rates is just over 28 pounds UK)
Mind you, the beer and food was good.
Oslo has a compact central area which is easy to walk around and I'm getting on a bit, so it should be OK for anyone.
