“Totally modernized”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2014

I have stayed at this hotel many times over the years. Now,not travelling as I used to it came as quite a surprise to see all the modernization that it has undergone. The rooms including the bathroom have been modernized. The rooms have a frig, and proper tea making facilities.
I was particularly impressed with the breakfast. There were a wide selection of cereals but also real portions of fruit and a delicious fruit salad. And, a real improvement was the selection of eggs for your breakfast. I have known the catering manager for many, many years and the service you get from him and his team is superb.
A big plus tor this hotel is it is right next to the Raddisson Scandinavia which is the last stop on the airport bus..

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the noise of the trams which pass right by the hotel

Perfect budget (at least for residents in Norway) hotel in Oslo. Very well located by the Palace and right next to the main avenue Karl Johan. Rooms had acceptable size for beeing a budget hotel. Breakfast was good with alot of variety.

Well located hotel….nice rooms and friendly and efficient Front office staff. Have stayed here a few times before. This last visit was special thanks to Mr Rasmus ( Front Desk) and the Front office manager- Did not get his name. We had another 2 nice days in Oslo.

Room Tip: Try and get rooms with a little balcony….they are lovely especially in Summer.

Gosh, was this place awesome. The staff at the front desk was so kind and helpful! Mikael helped us the most and definitely went the extra mile for my family and I. We were full of questions and he answered every one,and always wrote it down and attached a map too. Our rooms were also great. The beds were extremely warm and comfortable; everything you want after a long day of traveling. The hotel even hosted a breakfast downstairs each morning and it was phenomenal! We will definitely be returning to this hotel in the future!! Thank you for having us!!

Stayed here for a weekend break. Hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the national theater train stop. 90 Kroner to take the train from the airport. Hotel is close to National Gallery, Royal Palace, and Karl Johans Gate (major shopping street).

Front desk staff is very pleasant and helpful with tourist suggestions. Quick check-in and check-out.

Room itself was standard European room. Actually, a little more spacious than most! More than enough room for 2 people. Beds were a little soft, but actually got a good night's sleep. There is a full mini bar, but you can stuff a few of your own drinks in.

Wifi was great! Was able to Facetime with no problems at all. A necessity when traveling away from home for 6-8 weeks at a time.

My only problem with the room was the bathroom! Oy! So cramped. The shower didn't have a separate floor area, so water gets everywhere. Zero privacy because you can't actually get dressed in the bathroom with the door closed.

Breakfast was great! We filled up enough to skip the expensive lunches in Oslo. There is plenty of hot food (eggs, sausage, beans, potatoes) and cold (cold cuts, cheese, yogurt, fruit) and yummy selection of bread!

Tip: To save money on food (Oslo, land of the $30 USD burgers) just walk a block to 7/11 or Deli de Luca.

Oslo is shockingly expensive. One gets warned about this repeatedly, but it's still mindblowing in person. I keep thinking - nay, hoping - that I have the exchange rate wrong. Alas, no. In this city of just 600,000, take what you think would be on the high end of the price range in Manhattan ... then double or triple or quadruple that price. Small bottle of Coke? $4.50. Tiny bag of potato chips? $5. 4-block cab ride? $30.

By these standards, the Thon Central Europa is a total bargain, or "budget hotel". I'm tickled pink to be paying less than $230/night for a hotel room, thanks to long-term planning and steep Internet discounting.

PROS:

-- Affordable, relatively speaking

-- Relatively spacious. Enough room for 2 desks, actually, as well as a decent-sized double bed (only a little smaller than queen), plus a fridge.

-- Cute decor. The birch hardwood floors are a great touch, as is the colorful contemporary decor. In a budget hotel, no less!

-- Best part might the included buffet breakfast. Not a huge selection, but what they have is high-quality stuff that is not cheap elsewhere. Tons of smoked salmon and caviar paste (the Scandinavian kind, not the Russian kind), 3 types of smoked fish, all sorts of wonderful freshly-baked bread you slice yourself off the loaf (as well as some typical Western stuff like bacon and eggs, but why waste your time and stomach space on that?)
(Pro tip: Try to eat as much protein as you can for breakfast, because you're probably going to be paying $25 for a basic sandwich later on when you get hungry again.)

-- Good location. Very walkable to the major old Oslo attractions (the national palace and university are just a couple of minutes away, as is the national theater; the waterfront isn't much further).

-- Nice staff (although, really, who isn't nice in Norway? It's not as if this one hotel is an island of courtesy in a sea of rudeness. But still.)

CONS (relatively minor):

-- No bathtub

-- No room service or actual restaurant. There's a cafe where breakfast is served, and you get a flyer for a local pizza place for "room service". (Delivery charge: $12.50, on top of a minimum purchase. What did I say about prices? Try the 7-11 down the street. It's only 3x what you would pay in North America, instead of 5x.)

-- On Sundays, even the cafe in the lobby is closed. (But this is true of Oslo generally - it is deader than a doornail on Sundays. Only restaurants are open. Even grocery stores are closed.)

Dear Davismaximus,

Thank you so much for taking time to write such a positive and entertaining review of your stay with us.

Unfortunately its very seldom the exchange rate.., Oslo is on the expensive side. That being said there are some parts of Oslo that are substantially cheaper than the most visited downtown areas. Try the areas around Grünerløkka og Torshov for more sensible pricing on cafés and restaurants. Hotel prices are at their highest in June due to high demand in the crossover of business and tourist traffic. Outside that period I believe Oslo’s hotel market is quite reasonably priced compared to other major cities.

In regards to your stay at Thon Europa I am delighted to read your comments regarding the room, our staff and the breakfast buffet. Russian caviar for breakfast is on our “wanted” list, but I think we will have to settle for the delicious Norwegian product for a while longer. Your kind comments regarding our wonderful staff has been shared with everyone here, thank you.

Café Europa is a café and restaurant that’s open from 1000-2330 Monday to Saturday. They serve a wide range of dishes at reasonable prices (by Norwegian standards). They also offer room service during their opening hours and there should have been a menu in your room. I am very sorry that this information was not made available to you.

We hope you will find the occasion to visit Oslo again and I am sure we will be able to offer you a good rate and a nice room the next time. We even have some rooms with their own terraces on the top floor. Please feel free to contact us for any assistance with your reservation or any other requests.

Thank you again for your comments and for choosing Thon Europa, everyone here welcomes you back!
