“Not so grand anymore”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2011

I am sure this hotel was grand a long time ago. Now it is rundown and in need of restauration. After a lot of money spent I am sure this will be a very beautiful hotel, but today it is heavily overpriced.
I did my booking on their website and had a confirmation mail with me, but they could not find my booking. When I stated the booking reference they said it was not their reference. Seems to be strange since the sender was from their own webadress.
They solved the problem but its not five star service either.

this old hotel is a real treat. The rooms are nice but the public areas ie the grand cafe are very nice.the breakfast was excellent - a very wide range of cooked and gravadlax, smoked salmon herrings , caviar, different types of good bread. the concierge was very helpful to us as we had to go to a funeral and various other places. Bar/vcafe not the most expensive in this very expensive city. The weekend rate of 1400NK wasnt too bad considering the quality of the hotel but the weekday rate was too much for me. the only thing we couldnt get was BBCnews24.The staff are very well trained and helpful.

My first stay at Grand Hotel ever. Old and continental. Quiet. Calm. Very nice breakfast room and good food. Price 1395 NOK is very competitive.

The Grand is a Grande Old Dame of a hotel...very turn of the last century with marble, chandeliers and the weight of history bearing down on you from the moment you enter. I had a two night stay for business in Oslo and the central location was why I choose the hotel. I was told that Obama stayed here on his recent visit - but, am sure he didnt stay in my room!

Check in was efficient (like all things Norwegian), walking to my room was as if I was on an old and deserted Ocean Liner...lots of doors and a hallway carpet that reminded my of the film the Shining...old art deco art and odd furniture in long empty corridors. My room (with a door that opened outward) was a small but nicely appointed functional room. Basic bed, duvet not sheets, all the basics with 'you can't steal me' clothes hangars...the bathroom, efficient with white and black tiles and ample towels. All very corporate and basic.. But, here is the problem..the noise. I was on the 3rd floor facing an inside courtyard which at 4 am was where all of the housekeeping carts and wire bins on wheels are stored, and where deliveries are made. The hotel must have had 100's of rooms and it was near enough empty on my stay..why did they put me here I don't know!? But, my colleague on the 4th floor had the same experience... So, really below par. The room temperature was hard to control - varying between Sauna hot and icy air con cold.

The restaurant was 'grand' and empty...the breakfast was endless..but, do Norwegians really eat Tomato soup for breakfast? Service was functional not friendly - and, for a quick business trip it was fine. Wifi was free too. For the money, not sure it was a bargain...but next time I will try something more modern. As a back up - it is ok.

This hotel is absolutely perfect. It is as central in Oslo as you can get it and the rooms are beautiful. It's expensive, but worth it. We stayed in a large room facing "Karl Johans gate" and had a great view. The service is very good and the breakfast buffet is really great.

We stayed at the Grand for 3 nights over New Year. True the appearance and public areas are fabulous and offer a real Victorian experience, and the hotel was as central as you could get. The rooms though were in dire need of renovation. Some sites call this Hotel 5*, room wise it would barely warrant a 3. The air conditioning / heating left you with a sore throat, the decor aged, and the room facilities were limited e.g. no tea / coffee materials even though there was a kettle. To it's credit, the ice machine down the hall was a great asset. Room cleaning was of a good standard, but the bathroom shower leaked all over the place, and you didn't have to look hard to find mould in the seams etc. Most of the staff were conservatively friendly, but poorly informed it seemed regarding tourist activities available over New Year. You would have the impression the hotel was running on minimal staff over the holiday period since the luggage porters / waiters were here now and gone the next. We booked the New Year Buffet for New Years Eve, which was very nice starters wise, but, sadly had only two main courses to choose from and the bar closed at 10 pm. (with no residents bar available). I was a little surprised also that you kept the same cutlery throughout, and you were only provided with a knife and fork, not even a full table setting. The cold breakfasts were very good, although a little inconsistent from day to day, and as the previous reviewer commented, staff were slow to refill empty trays etc. Although perhaps personal, I was a bit annoyed that the toaster disappeared on the second day. The hot breakfast was basically cold, and seemed to have been lying around for a while. This hotel is difficult to rate overall, since it is often the little things that can have a disproportionate affect on your experience. That said, compared to other 5* hotels we have stayed in (besides appearance), the Grand sadly didn't even come close.
