“Food hotel, amazing position”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2012

This historical hotel is fantastic, you feel part,of,the history. Standard rooms are not very big but overall quality is satisfactory. Remarkable breakfast in the grand Cafe, next door to the hotel. Fantastic the swimming pool at 7 floor.

A central hotel in Oslo about 10 minutes walk from Oslo Central station. Good restaurants nearby. Five minutes walk to waterfront. Rooms are a good size and well appointed with jug and fridge etc. Wi fi in rooms is a help as is the beautiful breakfast. Only issue is the main lifts are up 4-5 steps near the front reception. Heavy bags are a pain to carry up any stairs. Having said that it is a top hotel and I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Having the fridge in room helps to keep food for lunch which saves a little on cost and the jug is v...

This is an old yet basically good hotel in an excellent location. Staff are helpful and in general the amenities are what you would expect in a hotel of this class. However, there are a few major drawbacks which one really should not get at this price level. When we arrived we found the toilet seat broken. The mini bar was very poorly stocked and didn't work so all the drinks were hot. The air conditioning was either not working or totally inadequate - possibly both!. We had to 'sleep' with the window open, but the road outside was unbelievably noisy. We complained the following morning and a workmen arrived within half an hour. He replaced the broken toilet seat but the mini bar was still hot and the air con still not working. This is how it remained for the next four days. No further attempts at rectification were taken. This is simply not acceptable. Why install air con which is totally inadequate? I accept that Norway can be cold in winter but it also gets very hot in summer! This is the fourth Scandinavian country I have so far visited on this trip and none of the hotels have had adequate air con. At the exorbitant prices being charged I would have thought that should be a high priority along with a well stocked and functioning mini bar. I would also point out that while the cold buffet breakfast was excellent, the 'hot' breakfast was, as usual, tepid or cold. Again in a hotel of this class and price this is not acceptable. Unless I could be sure that these problems had been solved I would not use again. Many other contributors have raised the same points as me so the hotel doesn't seem very interested in solving them. A geat pity!

Room Tip: Insist on a quiet room and ensure the aircon is working!

Recently stayed here for two nights, in a deluxe room. I had a good time, but - in my opinon - Grand doesn't deliver that final touch you expect from five star properties.

Good

- Very central location
- Modern, recently refurbished room of adequate size.
- Excellent view towards Karl Johan/Stortinget
- French balcony
- Friendly and helpful staff
- High quality towels

Less good

- Terrible mini bar selection. No glass bottles, only plastic and cans. There were 6 bottles of still water and 6 cans of Coca-Cola, but no sparkling water and no other soft drinks or juices. Mini bar was half empty when I arrived, which might explain it. However, it was never restocked.

- The room lacked ambience. There was only one painting in the room, three walls were totally empty. No flowers, no fruit, no sculptures or similar. Except for one book and two magazines, the lamps were the only decoration I could see. Made it feel a bit soulless.

- The door to the french balcony was not very well isolated, so you would get a bit of noise inside. No problem for me, but if you are sound sensitive it could be an issue.

- Air condition would suddenly start running, making a lot of noise. Usually lasted for a minute or two.

- Porters/doormen were never visible anywhere but behind the reception. They appeared to work more as receptionist, rather than actual doormen/porters.

Even if I had a good time, I don't think I will book Grand again. Most likely going for Bristol or Continental next time.

Room Tip: Ask for a modern room. If you are sound sensitive, ask for a quiet room, as the hotel is facing two...

Arrived at 10:30 am at the reception, presented my booking and passports but there was no welcome and receptionist 'Maria' has no courtesy and told us to come back after 15:00 without a single word of welcome. Breakfast was great but as described by a waitress to a guest "it's a chaos" indeed it was in our 2 days stay, there is no system of queuing and u need to help yourself. Ironic for such lovely hotel to provide such poor service

The Grand Hotel is central and has very nice rooms. If you are lucky you can also get good prices via Expedia or Booking.com.
The harbor is reachable in 5 min by feet :-)
The breakfast is great and has something for every taste. We also found gluten free bread.
Fazit: Central and very nice Hotel with friendly service.

Stayed at the Grand Hotel in Oslo for a few nights. The location is great, right in the city center near all attractions. The hotel itself is comfortable but does not stand out in any way. The room was spacious but dated and bit dark, bathroom needed updating and could be cleaner. Breakfast was excellent. Front desk staff was very helpful with dinner reservations, bell service sometimes great and sometimes lacking.
