“Allergy sufferers beware”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2011

I was pleased to see that the bedding was super clean, vacuuming was done well on the floor and even the drapes weren't dusty when I got in. However, when I was coughing, wheezing and got watery eyes, I took a closer look- there was a great deal of mould on the bathroom caulking, the floorboards were caked with dust. That said, the gym was good, the breakfast was excellent and the location can't be beat. If allergies are a problem for you I'd suggest you look to a newer hotel with different standards and better accomodation for allergies.

Room Tip: The hotel is on a main drag, so ask for an inside room if you're a light sleeper.

We had a nice time at this hotel, no serious complaints although several quicks.

Pros:

Location is perfect
Cool pool and good fitness area
Rooms are nice and bed is really comfy (ask for refurbished room)
Free wifi is nice

Cons:

Breakfast is only so-so
Our room had a window in the bathroom that looked in to other rooms and had no curtain, kind of weird
The service is not 5 star, while very pleasant it's lacking several things like bathrobes and slippers and conditioner in the bathrooms.

I would recommend the Grand, but it has to be at the right price.

All in all we loved Oslo, beautiful, clean but very expensive.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room!

The Grand Hotel has a lot going for it -- great breakfast, great swimming pool and concierges. However, there are the little annoying things that keep it from being great. For instance, we had no wifi in room (although it billed itself as having that), the jets in the bathtub didn't work, the light bulb in the reading lamp was burnt out and the maid "forgot" to leave toilet paper and bath salt. We had a great view from our room but a litany of little things that add up kept this hotel from being truly grand.

I stayed in a room on the Ladies' Floor which was a pleasant change. The room was thoughtfully and stylishly equipped and decorated, so it felt more boutique than regular 5*, making my stay more enjoyable, much less anonymous. The view from the room was nothing to be excited about, but the room itself was interesting enough to distract from that.

The pool up on the top floor is funky, had a lovely swim up there.

Location is excellent and it's an easy walk to the airport train.

I have stayed in several hotels in Oslo, but whenever it is possible, I go back to Grand Hotel. I absolutely love the location and the atmosphere there - you are right in the centre of the city in a hotel with a style.
Check-in is always smooth and despite the fact that some of the rooms would require a small facelift, you have all that you need. And even a little more - the hotel is full of charming decorations and this makes you feel like home - even if your home is totally different.
Rooms can be a bit shabby (in my case 1 time from 6), it is clean and comfortable - meaning all you expect from hotel room are there.
Breakfast is getting better - even the coffee is pretty much OK nowadays - if they could invest into coffee machines which could make caffee latte, breakfast would be excellent.
In Oslo Grand hotel you feel like in Grand Hotel. It is not trendy, but absolutely lovable.

Room Tip: Rooms facing courtyard doesn't have good view, but are very quiet.

During this visit to Norway, the newspapers reported another massive oil discovery. Great for Norway, too bad for the travellers to that beautiful country. Decent staff will become ever more expensive and service will suffer even more.

There are good bits at the Grand. Some of the really young staff members are vivacious and terrifically helpful. Breakfast was quite a treat, although the waiters and waitresses clueless. In fact they were all just busboys/girls. Cleaning stuff away but attempting to service the guests. I tried to speak with one. Charmingly other-worldly, she spoke no Norwegian at all.

The Grand obviously finds it hard to get good staff. At 17:00 today I was supposed to be on a conference call, joined by answering an in-coming call, but the hotel could not be quite be bothered to answer the phone. Hard to find the staff...

When I checked I found the room was almost clean, apart from the odd pubic hair in the bathroom. Hard to find the staff. The next morning I asked for the room to be cleaned at a particular time, but they missed the time-slot between my calls. Hard to find the staff....

I had dinner last night, in the cafe. 1/2 Rioja and duck breast. No starter, no pudding. About £70. Food was ok, wine fine. Service was poor, it was just before closing time and they could barely be bothered. Hard to find the staff...

Tonight I asked for an ice-bucket. There really ought to be one, in every room, filled every afternoon with gusto and ice, in a hotel that regards itself is one of the best in the country. They sent one up and charged £5 for the room service.

The tragic thing is that the Grand almost certainly IS one of the ten best hotels in Norway. But it is certainly not grand, not even good. A good Norwegian phrase for the service would be Tarvelig!, but the staff are as comprehensively unfamiliar with what decent service is, reminiscent of a hotel in the old Soviet block.

This is the first time I have stayed in the Grand Hotel. I have previously stayed in the Continental, but never again. The Grand Hotel is aged, but is in excellent condition. My room was expansive, plush and clean. The staff were marvellous as well. The icing on the cake was the breakfast. I would have to call it a "Gourmet Breakfast". There was so much to choose from. I could have had at least a five course breakfast. I'll be back!
