“Fantastic Collection!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

Coming to Oslo and not visiting this Gallery is missing a great opportunity to see some of the best painters and sculptors of the world, such as, obviously, Edvard Munch ( The Scream, among many others), Renoir, Picasso, Amadeo Modigliani, Van Gogh (self portrait), Edgar Degas, Monet, Manet, Delacroix (Pietá), etc. It worth a lot spending a couple of hours inside of this Gallery, even for thouse who are not quite lovers of Painting. Sunday the visit is free of charge!

“See art from all over the world”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

The national gallery offers a broad range of different artists. A lot of the paintings are famous and well known. It is nice to see them all combined.

“Not just Monch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

But it is the main attraction. You'll also spot Rodin, Cézanne and Picasso among others. Very crowded when it's raining outside

“Lovely lovely gallery!”

Amazing art and so nicely laid out. Great gift shop and pleasant staff. Absolutely worth going to. Free entry on Sundays but to our surprise Tuesdays entry was free too.

“Small but good collection of both Norwegian and other international works.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

The main permanent collection of art is on the first (top) floor of the building and is hung in approximately 26 rooms/salons of varying sizes. There is a large Munch collection in one of the rooms with the stars of the show being a version of "The Scream" and "Madonna" mother with sick child. Unfortunately the gallery did not allow photos to be taken in the Munch Room even though photos could be taken of the paintings in the Munch Museum.

The gallery also has some good landscapes by local artists and a selection of Impressionist paintings from Cezanne, Monet, Manet and Van Gogh. There is also an excellent El Greco "St Peter repenting".

Downstairs was an excellent and prolific temporary exhibition of work by Christian Krohg.

Entry to the National Gallery was free with the Oslo Card. The National Gallery is less than 10 minutes walk from the Nationaltheatret subway station and a further 10-12 minute walk from the Oslo Town Hall (Radhus).

Worth a visit.
