We had taken the train into Oslo and arrived very late at night. We were alone in a strange city in the dark and unsure of where we were supposed to go. So it was a relief to come out of the train station and see this hotel all lit up and right across the street.
Clarion Royal Christiania is a multi-story modern hotel with all the amenities; including a wonderful buffet breakfast, a restaurant for noon and evening meals, a pool and exercise room, and spacious conference areas.
Our arrangements were booked ahead and by someone else, so we were not sure what to expect, and were somewhat worried about our late arrival and the availibility of our room. Sure enough, all the regular rooms had been taken. The hotel receptionist was very kind and automatically upgraded us to a larger room at no additional cost. We were given a large suite room over the atrium on the second level. The atrium was delightful and the interior views were nice.
Our suite had a nice sized living area with mini-bar, separated from the bath and bedroom by center-close doors. This would make a small conference in one's own room possible. Items in the mini-bar are billed, if used. Soft drinks, beer/wine, candy. All Internet connections are available and one doesn't have to hunt for them as we have done elsewhere. Work space is well-lighted and large enough to manage the laptop and the briefcase.
The closet came complete with a trouser pressing machine, as well as extra bedding, etc.
The bathroom was marble, large and well lit, with a well-lit dressing mirror. It featured a heated floor, and a heated towel bar to warm the towels while showering. The sink and tub had liquid soap and there was a separate shower. The counter top was sticky and filmy, as if it hadn't been cleaned well. After I scrubbed it down, it was quite ample for the bathroom gear we travel with. In the morning, I did discover that the lighting wasn't great for make-up application.
The room had been shut up and we were glad to find that the windows did open on the second level as the room was too warm and the air-conditioning didn't seem to run.
The beds were comfortable and after the room cooled down and we shut the window, it was very quiet. My difficulty in sleeping had nothing to do with the room or the bed.
On the top (14th) floor are penthouse type suites, but there is also a wonderful window with great views of the city. This would be all we would see of it.
We really liked the breakfast. Many choices and helpful staff. Wide vareity of crisp breads, meats and cheeses, fresh fruits and vegetables. A make to order omelet area, and yummy self-serve waffles. Eggs every way, and all the usual breakfast meats.
The hotel was lovely and we were pleased. But the next morning, we had to find our way to the bus station with our bags. We were glad we had scoped this out the night before. The hotel is in city center and while it was lovely, the city center can be a bit scary to foreign tourist strangers. We noticed that the hotel keys worked somewhat differently than we expected and they contained some kind of electronic chip that kept track of every door that they opened. All of one's moves were recorded. Maybe this is necessary, but it could also be somewhat unnerving. After we checked out and were on our way, and I saw the bus station, which was dirty and creepy, I understood the need for this tight security better. I never felt safe waiting for the bus.
This is a hotel best suited to the business traveler, but familes are welcome.
We enjoyed our stay.
