“Amazing!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2013

It is incredible that such a beautiful natural area is so close to the city and so easy to get to. The T-bane to Frognerseteren takes you up in under 30 minutes with some amazing views on the way. A normal zone 1 ticket, either single of 24 hours will get you up there. Then you have a lovely walk through the woods, maybe stopping at the Frognerseteren restaurant for some Eplekake and hot chocolate before taking a walk down to Holmenkollen to see the ski jump. There are T-Bane stops all the way down if you want to jump on earlier and head back to the city.

“Great all year around”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

Few other cities of the world can boast outdoors right on their doorstep the way Oslo does. In the wither, it's great for cross-country skiing. In the summer, you can hike, jog or take you bicycle for a ride. Great for all ages, individuals and groups. As the Norwegians say: "Ut på tur, aldri sur!"

“Endless outdoor possibilities at the end of the Metro”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

Nordmarka is a protected area (rather like a national park) of forest, lakes and hills extending for about 50 kilometres north of the city. The hills rise up to 700 meters+. In the winter there is reliable snow for 3 months or so, up to 4 months in the northern part. There are hundreds of ski trails and a few cafes, some of which are only open at weekends. The lakes freeze hard so that the ski trails routinely go across the lakes. I skied cross country from the northern edge back into the city, a trip of 45-50 km. We took sleeping bags and our own food. We stayed overnight at one of the unserviced DNT ramblers cabins and were able to cook food. Very friendly. When the snow and ice melts, there are lots of safe cycling tracks. In summer, the lakes are warm enough for swimming. The public cannot drive cars into Nordmarka. Oslo is almost unique in a capital city having such an area of natural beauty at the end of two metro lines.

“The Normarka Syndrome - become addicted you too...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

There is a well-known expression that Norwegians cannot stay abroad for long because they long for trips in the forest and lake area in the hills surrounding Oslo. We just drove with our Danish friends to our cabin there the other day. They were amazed at how suddenly we were out of town. In winter you can go sleigh riding or skiing. Or when there is little snow - try skating on the lakes. There are some cabins or rooms for rent via the Tourist Association or Skiing Association.
