Tromso, the Paris of the north, is undergoing a huge transformation since my first visit almost 4 years ago. New hotels, lots more tourists all on the back of the Aurora Borealis and the other brilliant adventures to be had in this lovely city.So does the hotel really matter, when the action is outside?
Yes, but the great news is you don't have to pay too much to get a great deal of hotel. Skansen was listed as budget on the Norwegian website, but its location meant it was great for the city centre and the office I was visiting. Reception was clean, tidy and the receptionist was friendly and informed me of the entrance after 1130.
A third floor room meant it was nice and quiet, although as always it was rather warm, but unplugging the heater did the trick. The room was compact but not small with a good sized bed and a good level of decor. Table to work from and free wi-fi ticked the boxes.
The bathroom was recently refurbished, spacious and beautifully decorated with a walk in shower but no bath, not a problem for me. It did really look very classy.
The bed itself was comfy and I had a very good nights sleep.
Breakfast was served in the dining room, which again was very clean and tidy. The selection was a little limited and could have done with some fresh fruit, but there was plenty on show and I left for the day on a full stomach with tasty food to keep me going.
So to sum up, this hotel was rather undersold on the website, it is extremely good value for money, well located and delivered a good nights sleep. There are plenty of hotels in Tromso, some of which are very pricey thanks to demand, but don't discount Skansen, it really is a lovely little place and may well give you some more money to undertake an extra activity or two and let's face it, that is what Tromso is all about.
