“Viking Apartment, Tromso”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2013

We are 3 couples whom had travelled from Malaysia to Tromso. We booked into a 3 rooms apartment which was initially 2 double and 1 single room and Rojna whom attended to us was kind enough to request the management for a upgrade to a deluxe apartment to accommodate our stay. The apartment was lovely with full cooking facilities. The supermarket is just abt 5 mins away from where we stayed. There were waffle served at 5 pm for all guests and staffs are very helpful to assist us with direction of place of interest and where to ride the local buses. We are all mesmerize with the place and we all agreed that it is a place to come back again in future.

We booked a one room apartment - on arrival (very early) the staff immediately organised for the apartment to be made ready within 45 minutes - and it was. The apartment was very clean and well appointed - a full size kitchen, which was used due to the expensive meals in Norway. The apartment was an easy (icy footpaths) walk to the city centre and tourist information. There are supermarkets within a couple of minutes. Laundry facilities are available at the hotel next door, but you need to wait until early morning or late afternoon when it is not being used by housekeeping. The front office staff were very helpful - everything from suggesting NL tours to booking a taxi to the airport (just a little more expensive than the shuttle). On arrival the very friendly receptionist offered refreshments, a place to rest, took care of our luggage, and even spent time explaining the local map and best attractions. Her local knowledge was very welcome. Oh, and getting to the apartment from the airport was very easy. Just get on the airport shuttle bus and you are dropped almost at the door (tell the driver where you are staying). The only (minor) downside to the apartment was the entry where you passed rubbish bins and went to the back of the building. Nothing to worry about but maybe distracting for those who like marble-entry hotels.

I stayed at Hotel Viking with my partner recently and couldn't of asked for more.

The room we stayed in was clean, smart and modern, with a lovely bathroom. The staff were amazing, willing to do anything to help us enjoy our stay. They organised a Northern Lights trip with a local, and we were certainly not disappointed ! We will re visit Tromso in the future, to spot some Whales and we will definately be going back to Hotel Viking.

Thank you for all your help and hospitality.

We chose a two bedroom apartment because we were travelling with a teenage son who likes his own space. I have to be honest, the description led us to expect something a little more spacious. The two bedrooms were each only just large enough for a double bed, which had 3 sides against the wall so that the person sleeping on the far side had to climb over the other. The sitting room was quite comfortable, but there was no dining area and the kitchen was not really large enough to use to prepare meals. Although there was a cooker and a microwave, the microwave was on top of a fridge/freezer taller than me (I am 1.75 metres) as there was no room to put it on the worksurface.

The free WiFi was a bonus, and it's good to have free tea and coffee available at reception but when it's cold outside and you are in a building down the street I would rather have a kettle in the apartment so we can prepare our own drinks. (Must remember to buy a travel kettle!) Even though there appeared to be no rooms above ours, we still heard a lot of noise from above - very odd.

The location was very convenient, close to the Eurospar supermarket and just down the street from the Den 4 Rosen restaurant, which is excellent. Nothing is very far away in Tromso. There is a large hotel being constructed just across the street and the noise from the construction site was disturbing in the morning after a late Northern Lights trip. We had no problem with the smoke alarm, but our neighbours didn't seem to be able to cook without setting it off which got very annoying.

There was only one mirror and very few electric sockets - the only place where a hairdryer could be plugged in close enough to see the mirror was directly above the basin, which would not meet safety standards in many countries. A mirror in the bedroom or living room would reduce competition for the bathroom. However, the bathroom fittings were excellent, with a good quality shower and a large cubicle. And it was all very clean. That said, if I went to Tromso again, I probably would not stay here.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Blue apartment. It's just big enough for 4 - don't be tempted to use the so...

My husband and I were on our honeymoon and looking for a hotel that was reasonably priced in Tromso. I am so glad we picked this hotel. The room was a little small, but since we wanted to be out and about the size of the room didn't bother us. The staff at the hotel were amazing, they helped us with all of our little questions and helped us find our way around on the buses and gave advice on places we could walk to in order to get a good view of the northern lights. Best part about this place: they have free breakfast AND free waffles in the evenings from 5-9 pm. The food in Tromso is SOOOO expensive that this helped us keep on budget. Plus the waffled were delicious and they offer coffee/tea 24/7! This hotel was very close to everything, supermarkets, bus stops and the Mack brewery. I recommend this hotel if looking for a reasonable place to stay with great service!

We stayed in one of the 2 bed apartments for 4 nights with our 2 children and it was perfect for what we needed, warm, clean and comfortable! Located just up the hill from the hotel meant that we had views over the moutains but were very close to everything, with a eurospar a few minutes walk away.

The bedrooms were small & a little dark, but had plenty of storage and really they were only used for sleep, so not a problem - living room was great, nice big comfy sofa & good sized dinning table too. Shower was brilliant - water pressure makes for an excellent invigorating wake you up shower!

The only thing I would say is that the kitchen was lacking in untensils and serving stuff etc - though it was clean and tidy, but it was a bit of a juggle with cooking & serving implements as we ate in most nights so not to have to pay the ridiculous prices charged in the restaurants - burger king was £35 for 2 kids happy meals & 1 burger meal!!

The kitchen is also devoid of any of the basics except for salt - I realise that this is standard, but having to buy sugar, oil etc and leaving most of it behind is a little frustrating considering the price of the apartments! But really this is my only grumble, oh except for the pillows, one pillow each and they were far to soft, though bed very comfortable.

One other after thought - ice! There was a lot of ice when we were there, though the main road was clear everywhere else was a nightmare, there was a lot of slipping and sliding going on especially on the hill, we mostly avoided the pavements because they were awful - I ended up buying some great little ice crampons that go over the toe of your boots - made all the difference, so do take some if you have them as they are, of course, twice the price in Norway!

My wife and I have just returned from a visit to Tromso (split into two visits by a trip round the coast on the MS Nordlys). We booked both before and after stays in the Viking hotel .The hotel was very easy to find only 200 metres from the bus stop from the airport. We were given a room on the fourth floor looking out to the front of the hotel (the best view) To be honest the room was slightly small. but I was told there were bigger rooms available. There my negatives end because everything else about the hotel was fine. The thing that made this hotel was the staff from Ronja (the receptionist during the evening) to the girls that clean the rooms and all the other staff that made this hotel work. every thing was done with a smile and nothing was too difficult. The breakfast was advertised as continental, which it was, but with added things such as several types of bread and bread rolls with various fish dishes eggs meats, cheeses and salad together with pastries and jams this meant that would be plenty for anybody.
All day (24 hours) there was free tea and coffee in the reception and between 5 and 9 in the evening there was free self cook waffles with cream and jams to put on them.
In the reception area was a tv with about 20 channels many of which were in English with Norwegian sub titles (Odd but true)
The whole hotel has had some form of refurbishment over the last 12 months which meant that the rooms were of modern décor. So don't be put off by the outside appearance because once inside we were met with warmth and friendliness throughout our stay
Well done to all the staff.
