“Best way to see the lights”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2014

Trip advisor was the reason we chose this tour and the reviews are right. I have been on a number of guided tours over the years, but never has a guide tried as hard. Even though it was a pretty cloudy night, our guide found the gaps in the clouds and we did get to see the lights. The trip was meant to finish around 1am, however our guide was keen and happy to continue hunting the lights with our group until they disappeared from sight. We returned to our hotel at 3am. His enthusiasm was infectious.
Even if we hadn't seen the lights it was a great trip. Wearing a big warm suit, sitting on a reindeer skin, drinking hot tea out of wooden mugs, on a beach, round a fire and surrounded by snow. A fantastic experience.

“Spectacular Experience and a Passionate Guide”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2014

I joined Markus on two of the last tours for the season in April and I'll admit at first I thought he was quirky and amusing with how often he would refer to different apps and forecasting websites or stop the vehicle to feel the wind. But whatever he did along with the determination to drive our group 3 hours into Finland paid off and got us over an hour of seeing great aurora activity. We only quit because myself and the other guests were getting too cold. I'm sure Markus would have stayed past morning. You can tell he has a passion for his job and hunting the lights - he was definitely the most excited person in the group when we found the lights :)

Markus set up a fire, provided tea/coffee, baguettes, and a delicious goat cheese and cinnamon pastry; everything fresh and local. Truly a memorable experience! And I owe so much to Markus for helping me cross off the Northern Lights from my bucket list.

We ended up getting back to Tromsø around 3-4am, but definitely worth the trip. Since it can potentially be a long trip, I wouldn't recommend young children for this particular trip, but it's a guaranteed enjoyable experience for anyone else.

“Inspiring experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2014

We did this for 5 nights straight starting on the 16th of March. We were very lucky because we heard it was snowing and very cloudy (generally bad weather for seeing the lights) the week before it came and the weather took a turn for the worse after we left also so thank God for that.

Our first night was spent with Matthias. Although we didn't manage to see any lights on the first night, the full moon was very bright and the skies completely clear so we still managed to get some nice scenery shots out of it. Matthias built a fire for us at a beach and we sat down and had baguettes and lefse while he entertained us with his fireproof hands. This guy literally just picks up hot logs like nobody's business and chops wood with his fingers a few millimeters away from the axe. He was very friendly and although we didn't see the lights that night we ended the night happy.

The next 4 nights were then spent with Markus, who is really amazing You can tell he really loves what he does and he goes out of his way to make everyone feel comfortable as well as educate us on random facts (like how reindeer can only be herded by Sami in Norway). When we chased the lights, he was attentive to both the road and the sky at the same time and he would check the forecast, call the meteorologist, liaise with other lights chasers, and find out where had the clearest skies. He would then drive there and along the way stop the van, get out and check the skies. Being a professional photographer, he also had a knack for choosing really great spots with good foregrounds. Like Matthias, he also helped us with setting up our cameras + lending us tripods so for those who are clueless this is something really good that greenfox does. He also helped us take photos with his unique method of using a headlight as a flash. I went with my dad and a friend and on two nights my dad felt cold and requested to go back to the van instead of sit by the campfire with us and Markus went back to the van to check on him, offer him baguettes and turn on the engine to warm the van up. We thought that was a very thoughtful gesture on his part.

Also, since we spent 4 nights with him, we also spent quite a lot of time talking to him about other things which is great since he is quite the conversationalist, ranging from topics like music to what sort of moisturizer is good (he recommends coconut oil and hemp oil), to how he spent the morning looking for a type of mushroom in the forest. I left pretty inspired by his fervor and passion for nature and photography so thank you for that, Markus! In addition, we also spotted a moose and three arctic foxes over the few nights so that was another highlight for me (haha).

Really wonderful experience, all in all

“Fantastic Northern Light guide”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2014

We did 2 nights of northern lights chasing with Green Fox guiding one night with Marcus and the second night with Matias, both were excellent guides.
On the first night we saw the light over head before we had even left Tromso, so we spent 30 minutes admiring the display, unfortunately this was the best display we got to see, on the 2nd night there was clearly a spectacular display hidden just behind a bank of green glowing clouds.
Both nights we ended up in Finland, with the guide keeping us informed and entertained.
They supplied food, tea, coffee, thermal suits (great for making snow angels) and ice spikes (very important when the only place to stop if on the ice road side) and most importantly camera tripods.

With the bad weather in Tromso we are almost certain we will not get to see the lights. Sign up with GreenFox as a last resort and am immediately impressed by the service level as I exchange emails and calls to book the trip. We went out with Markus on 01-Apr and inspite of the bad weather, he is always positive and makes frequent stops to check where he can find an open sky for us. We drove all the way to Finland and back, and finally, we catch the lights! Though modest and just a short display, inview of the bad weather we are really blessed to have seen it. I echo a previous review that 'this tour doesn't give up'. Highly recommended!
