“Good for killing time in Tromso”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013 via mobile

This museum is close to our hotel so we decided to pass some time here one afternoon and were glad that we did. The exhibitions are all labelled in Norwegian but we had a booklet giving background info and details of some of the exhibitions in English, which helped us understand what we were looking at without being too much info. The exhibitions are quite interesting and certainly give a lot of insight into hunting practices a few hundreds of years ago and polar exploration. The museum would benefit from introducing audio guides.

“Interesting insight on Norway's contribution to Polar exploration”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013

This is a small museum on the water's edge, and usually costs to enter, but on the day we visited they were celebrating Charles Darwin's birthday and entry was free. Most of the labelling was only in Norwegian, but we were given a comprehensive paper guide in English which explained the exhibits room by room. Although small there were many exhibits and I found the stories of Nansen and Amundsen particularly interesting. You get a good impression of what it was like to live and hunt in the arctic in the early years, and on the struggles to reach the North and South Poles.

“What an experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013

So worth the 3 hours drive from Tromso it was fabulous.

We were given snow suits so we could sit in the very deep snow with the wolves and Arctic fox - a once in a lifetime experience.

The staff were so incredible, they spotted the fact that my footwear was inadequate and gave me some boots and thick socks - thank you very much to the lady on reception.

It is obvious that the keepers are passionate about the animals, do support what they do and yes, it is expensive but where else can you kiss a wolf!

We truly loved it. The thick snow and temperatures of -16 did help too!

Small museum of all things to do with polar exploration. A lot of original artifacts and archiological finds. Very inexpensive and lots to see.
