“Excellent hotel with budget rates”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2014

The 2 reasons why we did choose this hotel were a) its low room rates and b) its location directly city center. We were expecting a typical budget hotel with tiny rooms and not so many services.
During our stay we were truly delighted by hotel's professional approach, big, bright and clean rooms and delicious breaksfast. The staff was always very friendly and professional. They quickly answered all our questions, helped us with very good suggestions about Tromso, restaurants and gave very useful tips. I still don't understand why the hotel rates itself as "budget" with all these great services. They are just fabulous

We stayed for one night at the beginning of our holiday and one night at the end of the holiday.we agree with all the previous comments re the hotel being better than a budget hotel.the rooms were clean and had everything you could want for a few days stay. We had a double room but it was small compared to our friends twin rooms but it was sufficient for one nights stay.the breakfast as already stated was excellent and better than some we have had in four star hotels. The situation of the hotel was ideal and the staff in the hotel were very friendly and helpful.all in all a good hotel for the money.

Room Tip: Back of hotel and top floors and also a twin room instead of double as much larger.

Myself and two friends shared a four person room. We had a budget so were expecting this Hotel to be "budget" but it wasn't at all. It was really nice. The room was huge, had an on suite bathroom where hair dryer, shampoos, towels and soaps were provided. The beds were really comfortable and warm, we had a TV, a Sofa and lots of storage space. The rooms were cleaned every day, beds made for you. The staff were all really friendly and helpful when we wanted to order a taxi or leave our bags in storage before check in. Breakfast was included which was served in an adjoining restaurant and there was loads of food, with a great variety to choose from. There were no loud guests and you definitely get a sense of privacy in your room. Aside from the hotel being great, it was also right in the center of the city so all the main tourist places and restaurants were literally no more than a 5-10 minute walk away. The reception desk can also provide you with a map of the city, and help you to book tours to do whale watching, aurora borealis chases, reindeer and dog sledding etc. Really recommend this hotel to anyone. Big groups, small groups, families and singles.

Room Tip: It doesn't show when you can check in on the website but, you can check in a 4pm and check out a...

I stayed here for 4 nights with a friend and really enjoyed it. The breakfast and restaurant attached was very good and the rooms and service were also great. Location wise it's only 5 min walk from centre of town which is handy when it's -15 degrees outside. Only downside was a group of kids where staying on our level for 2/4 nights and were quite noisy. I think this might be a common occurrence but the staff were happy to speak to them when we complained. Would stay again.

The hotel is categorised as a budget hotel. There's not much that justifies this categorization: the staff is nice, helpful and friendly. The free breakfast is good and there's also free coffee in the lobby. The breakfast is served in the adjacent restaurant Egon, that serves nice burgers in the evening.
The only thing that justify budget category was the bathroom sink that was not properly fitted to the wall.
The location is excellent with lots of restaurants and bars nearby.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor, not facing the street. The quiet rooms on floors up to 4 or 5 face other rooms...

We have just returned from a 4 night stay in Tromso and choose the Thon Polar Hotel through reviews and on price. We booked the airfare and hotel through Norwegian which is a fantastic airline.I had requested a room on the 9th floor and we were given room 942 which was a very big corner room with 2 large windows, 1 overlooking the town the other with views across the bridge and the Arctic cathedral. It was a lovely room with a good bathroom. The lift goes to floor number 8 and you have to walk the last few steps to floor 9, in our view this was well worth it for the room and the view. We briefly stayed in room 940 when they was an initial problem with room 942 (which was quickly resolved) but room 940 is much much smaller.
Breakfast is served in the Egon restaurant which is attached to the hotel. This must be one of the most extensive breakfasts I have ever come across in all my years of travelling. There was literally everything!! We also had dinner here one night and this was good too although not the rose wine!
Norway is expensive but with a good breakfast, it is possible to just buy a slice of pizza from a shop for lunch and this lasts you until dinner.
The weather was cold and icy when we were there. the streets of Tromso can be treacherous.
The sun made its first appearance of the year when we were there which was lovely to see.
We did the usual tourist haunts, the cable car, the polaria, polar museum. We walked everywhere, nowhere is far. The best decision we made however was to do the roundtrip tour from Tromso return using coach, bus and the coastal steamer. ( a huge cruise ship in fact) this cost us 75NKK each and took 8 hours but left at 4 in the evening so did not encroach on our days activities. It involved crossing a couples of fjords. The best part was on the ship part of the journey back to Tromso ( nice reasonable meal and bottle of wine in the boat's cafe) we went out on desk and there they were, the Northern lights dancing in the sky. They were there for a good 35 minutes before they faded away. It was beautiful.
Tromso and the hotel lived up to our expectations. A lovely city, lovely people and the hotel was super and was the staff. I would recommend to anyone.

Room Tip: if you can ask for big room on the 9th floor. email before you go

I was torn between Thon Polar Hotel and Thon Hotel, latter being newer but reading from the reviews, it has smaller rooms. Decided to book Thon Polar Hotel in the end as the rooms were bigger, had an attached restaurant (more of that later) and of cause, affordable rate at NOK 795/twin room/night with breakfast included at the attached restaurant - Egon.

Was given a room on level 8 and the room was basic and simple with a little living room area that has a sofa couch. While the bedroom has 2 soft single beds with not much space to move around, but it's fine as I was out of the hotel most of the time.

Toilet has heated flooring, very useful during the cold winter. There wasn't much space to put the luggages, which ended up on the sofa couch. Cupboard was just enough to hang 2 bulky jackets and 2 "spacesuits" worn for the northern lights tour.

Housekeeping was daily with fresh towels.

Staff at the reception were helpful and never without a smile. When we had to catch the early bus on the last day (at 5.30am), we informed receiption the night before and requested for a simple breakfast which was packed for us.

Now for the breakfast which was part of the room booking, breakfast starts 6.30am to 10.00am at Egon restaurant, which was connected to the hotel. I was amazed at the spread which included cold cuts, cheese, salmon, eggs & bacon, variety of bread, cereal, yoghurt, juice, tea & coffee, all these in buffet style! The usual cost of the buffet breakfast is NOK 114. So yep, I'm pretty much happy with the hotel.

Location of the hotel is fantastic, right in the middle of the city. Convenient to walk to the museums, library, restaurants and etc.

To get to the hotel, you'll need to take the airport express bus (Flybussen) that brings you to the bus stop near Rica Grand Hotel. Rica Grand Hotel is at the cross junction. Just head towards Rica Grand and when you turn round the corner (turn right), you'll see Thon Hotel. Thon Hotel Polar is just besides an adult toy shop. Nothing sleezy but I use it as a landmark.

Flybussen cost NOK 100/person for return ticket and the first bus to airport is at 5.30am, followed by the next at 6.50am. Google their website for other timings.

The bus stop to wait for the bus heading to the airport is behind Thon Hotel Polar, just around Rica Grand infront of a shop - Moods of Norway (clothing shop).

If you're visiting a cold country for the first time, you might want to get a shoe crimp (i might have gotten the spelling wrong). What it does is to prevent you from slipping on the ice pavement, which I fell 3 times and ended up with a sprained back! You can get them at the Tourism Information Center or the Tourist Shop which I saw was going for NOK 139. Slip them onto your boots and it will help you to walk safely. :-)
