“Great stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago

The hotel is located ideally in the city centre (its a small city anyways) with a short walk to all the local attractions. The hotel room was clean and stocked with all the amenities though the room is on the smaller side and congested (standard room) with a comparatively big bathroom. We were mostly outside so we did not care much about the room size. The beds are nice and fluffy with soft springs (I like those), if you are not used to sharing a fluffy bed then you might find it annoying (if your partner moves, you move too). There is a rooftop jacuzzi with a great view of the city (especially with the Northern lights).

The hotel staff were very friendly and courteous. The breakfast spread was great and the complimentary dinner spread was limited but wholesome (you save a fair bit of money). My wife is a vegetarian and although the dinner buffet did not have vegetarian fare, the chefs whipped up something for her. Overall, we had a very comfortable stay and a great time in Tromso.

This hotel was formerly known as "Bryggen", as it lies next to a row of old commercial seafront buildings (the most famous "Bryggen" in Norway is that in Bergen). There is a cluster of hotels in a small area next to the waterfront and competition is stiff.

Rooms in Aurora are average and nothing special (somewhat even unpractical if you want to work), but the very best in this hotel is the friendly and attentive staff. Also nice is their breakfast, where you get fresh fruit salad (many big hotels use factory-sliced frozen fruit) and real scrambled eggs (again, many big hotels use a factory-made egg mixture). Also nice is a complimentary light evening buffet and afternoon tea, when you can make your own fresh waffles together with Norwegian standards sour cream, jam and "brunost", a brown, sweet whey cheese. Upstairs is a small fitness room with sauna and outdoor jacuzzi with splendid views.

Things to improve would be better daily checks that lamps in the rooms are working and an improved lock system for the doors. The locking mechanism requires you to lock the door with your key card when you leave - most hotel doors in the world lock automatically when you close the door behind you. There was also problems with my key card three times during a five-night stay.
The fitness room could do with some equipment for weight training. There were only two pieces of dumbbells, 4 kg each.
Also, the dressing room and shower in the fitness area were somewhat unpractical with water slowly destroying the door. And the sauna stove was too small for the steam room, producing small, angry blasts of steam. A bigger stove with more stone mass would be nice.

All in all, a very positive experience and with some small adjustments it would have been excellent.

We would like to thank ALL of the staff for a really lovely stay, our room 419 (superior room) was clean, the beds were very comfortable and spacious.
The room had two arm chairs, a coffee table, chest of drawers, a mini fridge, Writing desk and chair, telephone, TV, trouser press, suitcase storage rack Kettle and cups (teas and Coffee), a hair-drier, and dressing gowns and slippers.
As some people have said there is a slight lack of hanging space (room for 2 coats and a very small hanging rail) but we found that it was sufficient for two people.

One of the previous reviews complains about noisy drunks; lets face it you're in a city and you will get the occasional drunk, we had a small disturbance on one night, but we had our window open and you can expect this anywhere. it was not a problem at all and did not spoil our stay, we found the hotel itself to be very quiet.

The staff from all departments are really friendly, helpful and polite.
The hotel gives very good value for money especially as Norway is so expensive.

We will be staying here on our next visit to Tromso.

Thanks once again to all of the staff.

Room Tip: Book a superior room as they are larger.

I booked a room with a standard bed and was in room 527.

The rooms are very small and beds are really uncomfortable. Its like sleeping on a bouncy house with kids bouncing. The mattress is a few inches (maybe 3 or 4) thick and is laid on extremely soft springs, so if the person sleeping next to you moves you move too.

If you are looking for some rest after a long day, I would not recommend this hotel.

The good things:
Excellent location; everything is less than a minute walk
3 meals (breakfast, waffles and dinner)
Heated bathroom floor
Clean rooms

Dear Yash S

Thank you for taking the time to share a review of your stay on TripAdvisor. I am disappointed to see your comments regarding our beds. The top-matresses are 7 cm and qiute normal in Norway. I am so sorry if the springs in the matress were too soft for you, unfortunately these are our standard beds.

If you ever get back it could be nice to know we have different sized rooms and also rooms with to separate beds.

We are pleased to see you despite the issue about the bed enjoyed the rest of the comfort we provide including the waffles, the evening meal and the loction.

Best regards Inger-Helen Hjemvoll / General manager

We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights, returning just yesterday. I cannot recommend it enough...the location, the staff, the comfort of the beds. The option to have breakfast and an evening meal included was perfect, as it made the stay more relaxed as after a cold day on activities in the snow, it meant you could get warm and dry and watch the snow falling over the harbour while you ate. Also as Norway is so expensive, financially it saves you a small fortune. The rooftop jacuzzi was amazing, never very busy and very beautiful to be in it and watch the snow fall. Yes there is a lack of storage in the rooms, but the other positives of this hotel by far outway that issue. Fully recommend it.

after spending some nights on a cruise ship I liked the idea of a good bed but what I got was a great bed. the Hotel is right in the centre of town and within walking distance from the docking bay for the Hurtigruten cruise ships and very close to the main shopping street in Tromso. A vey good breakfast that sets you up for all the site seeing to follow. only stayed one night but would happily stay there again if ever in the area.

Room Tip: we was on the 2nd floor but the view from the fifth floor was grand
