“I'm A Member”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2013

Becoming a member of the Royal and Ancient Society of Polar Bears was one of my "must do's" when visiting the town of Hammerfest. What more appropriate way to commemorate reaching the "world's most northerly town", as proclaimed by its mayor. For a fee of 180 NOK I was welcomed into the Society and received a wonderful certificate dated and signed by the Mayor, Club sticker, membership card, and a lovely polar bear pin in gilded silver and enamel to be worn only by members (not for sale!!). The Museum provided an interesting history of the area and the people who explored it. Wish I would have had more time to spend learning from the wonderful materials in the Museum. Maybe on my next visit.

“polar bear museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2013

I expected a souvenir shop and tourist trap from my readings. I was greatly surprized to find a free museum of (preserved) arctic animals and a great history, including a video, of northern Norway and its explorers. Signing up as a member in the Society was a fun souvenir, but the education was well worth the visit.

“Polar Bear Society”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2013

Once in the north you surely hope to see polar bears. Hammerfest even has polar bears standing statue outside the town hall. But there has never, at least in modern times, never been a polar bear to be seen near Hammerfest! But this town is very well worth a visit and once you are here you can visit and be a member of the Bear Society!

“A great place to visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2011

Visited here in February as part of a Hurtigruten cruise trip to see the Northern Lights. It is an excellent exhibition/ information centre and historical/cultural display focusing on polar bears, wildlife and life in general in the arctic. It is situated right on the quay within the tourist information centre and entry is free. It also incorporates a gift shop. You need about an hour to really see round and the displays and information boards/sheets are very interesting. There are a couple of great video displays and the whole place is really child-friendly.The staff were a delight and even though it was quite busy had time for everyone and were polite and helpful.
The Society has links with the World Wildlife Foundation which it supports in preserving polar bear habitats. A really lovely place to visit.
