“OK Conference place if you do a crowd close to Oslo”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2013

Here, You can negotiate a deal. It´s a perfectly OK hotel with a not so cool location. It´s therefore cool to negotiate a deal. The buffet is great if you cater a conference. You charge the conference and the meal ticket and make the arrangement with the hotel. Everybody will be happy here. It´s a good hotel for conferences, and not close to shopping malls and downtown attractions that will distract your guests. So if you are coming into Norway to do a conference, consider this place. The train ticket from Oslo is cheap compared to parking at an Oslo hotel and the room price here is much more reasonable than an Oslo hotel. And it is only 30 minutes from downtown Oslo.

Room Tip: Just ask, in a nice way. Always works the best.

Stay here for 2 nights - to be honest was not expecting much after some of the reviews on here but was pleasantly surprised.

Room was clean, functional and bed very comfy - bathroom had excellent shower and all in all ideal for the stay.
Location couldn't be better - right opposite the train station - high speed link from the airport - some good restaurants within the square opposite and walk across the bridge into the town.

Will use again if in Drammen.

1.hotel Ambassadeur was clean everything in the room was ok, but still it left us with the impersonal effect. It is not a ver cozy. There was a good garage under the hotel and breakfast was good. The situation is good.

I stayed at the First Hotel Ambassadeur on business with a few colleagues for one night. We chose it because it is very well situated for the airport train - being only a few minutes walk from the station.
Walking into the hotel, it feels a little dated, but it's OK. The reception staff were friendly and check in was efficient. The room had everything needed, and whilst it was modern enough, the bathroom could have done with a little refurbishment. I had a disabled access room (and can't comment on the layout from that perspective, not being disabled myself) but it meant that there was a large metal ramp in the room right next to the bed to allow acces over the threshold into the bathroom. It was removable, so not too sure why it was there (it made my feet cold!)...
We decided to eat in the hotel, and I probably wouldn't do so again. The menu was very limited, and the service took a long time (too long). That said, the food we had was OK if you're happy to settle for a burger.
All in all, there was no single thing that made me not want to stay here again, and it is an OK hotel, but I'm left with the feeling that I would probably try somewhere else next time.

The hotel has an unbeatable location for travellers by train (including the Airport Express "Flytoget" from OSL Gardermoen), as it is just across the square from the railway station. The classical exterior of the hotel is historically interesting. The lobby and reception area was roomy, clean and well lighted. The front desk staff were polite enough. However, they said my booking was for their cheaper annexe hotel Globus (it most certainly was not!), but when I protested, they gave me a room at the Ambassadeur. Having read some of the most negative reviews here, I feared the worst, but the room was very clean and appeared to be fairly recently refurbished. However, the room (a single) was quite small and very basic, and the ventilation was unsatisfactory. No minibar. The shower cubicle in the bathroom was so small that a person a little fatter than me would not be able to get in. Nevertheless, I might stay here again, due to the hotel's convenient location and a fairly agreeable price. The breakfast was fine.

I think they've been through a process of renovating the rooms, and so the room itself was ok although small. Comfy enough, although it could have been warmer, and if I was being picky it could have been cleaner. The central areas are pretty shabby still, and the service at reception leaves a little to be desired.

The restaurant may not have had a huge menu but the food was very good with great service, and not too expensive for Norway. Good selection at breakfast.

I wouldn't want to stay here for a long time, but for a night it was fine. Considering the chilliness of my room I'd think twice about staying here in the middle of winter though.

I read the last three reviews below after having had this hotel booked for me.
I arrived with these in my mind and was not looking forward to the stay.

However, after spending four nights here whilst working in Drammen, I can't help but feel that the negative experiences recorded in terms of dirty bathrooms, lousy restaurant service, menu selection, and cigarette smell are almost as if describing some Fawlty Towers-like alter ego of the hotel which I stayed in.

To clarify my experience, unlike below, I was booked into the new section, which is off to the left of the lobby, and the room was on the second floor.

There is the occasional smell which I think comes through the ventilation but it's more like a clean-burning wood-fire smell, neither strong nor unpleasant.

The bathroom was bright and extremely clean. I had to figure out how to "drive" the bath/shower tap but once I did, constant water temperature was no problem.

Breakfast starts at six so if you expect it to be available up to half an hour before lunch-time, I think that's rather unrealistic.
Breakfast menu includes Norwegian fare of a bread selection, cold meat, and cheese, then there's a potato and deli meat mix, scrambled egg, bacon, or a selection of cereal, muesli, and DIY with the dried fruit and nuts... and the buffet breakfast is included, not an extra.

The restaurant only opens for evening meals from 5pm and has more than the room service menu (the one which the Pommy guy whinged about being limited to burgers) available.
The only meal that didn't appear to be catered for - other than for group bookings - was lunch.

In terms of the restaurant personnel speaking English it must be remebered that it is a second language for some and for others a third. I had no problems with the waitress who I found helpful without being fawning or dismissive.

I personally don't miss over-priced mini-bars but not having a tea/coffee making facility in the room was jarring initially and since the mini-bar usually hold the milk I suppose it has some merit.

Would I stay here sgain? You betcha!
