“Very good, finer cuisine, on a lovely terrace”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2012 via mobile

The food here was very good, in the higher price and culinary region. Fresh ingredients, well prepared and presented, friendly staff. The outside terrace is very cosy in the summer. All in all a very good choice for good food!

“Excellent food, ok service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2012

The Gaumenspiel is actually linked with a sister restaurant, the St. Ellas next door, via a lovely garden. We spent a very pleasant evening there, enjoyed great food (salads and veggie burgers are highly recommended), interesting cocktails, an a generally nice atmosphere. Food is very good, not cheap, but for the quality the price is definitelt ok.
The younger members of the service team seem a little bit overwhelmed and inexperienced, but the greyhaired owner (?) working the bar is very service-oriented and professional. He asked our party of three if we would mind moving to the bar after dinner as there had been a glitch in table reservations. One round of drinks was offered for free in return, which was quite generous since we would have moved anyway.
One - very Viennese - drawback: customers are still allowed to smoke indoors and do so liberally, which distracts from the food. Let's hope politics bans smoking in restaurants once and for all!

“Excellent food in a bistro atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2012

Gaumenspiel delivers excellent, interesting food in a pleasant bistro environment. The location is away from tourists which is a plus. Prices are reasonable for the quality. Service is good.

“Vienna's best.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2012 via mobile

Far away from tourist concerns, schnitzel championships or austria's obsession with stodgy meat dishes. This is a light and aromatic cuisine based on fish and vegetables, herbs and poultry. The selection of wines by the glass is stunning. Deserts of impossible finesse.
The inner courtyard is divine in summer.
Booking essential.

An Austrian food critic wrote recently, as a damning pronouncement, mind you that this restaurant would fit London or New York better than Vienna. A good laugh for the poor fool.
