“Large apartment converted into a guest house”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2014

Large apartment converted into a guest house. From the station of U-Bahn "Alser Strasse" take tram No. 43 for two stops, just go a little bit back, near the flowers shop is entrance to the entrance hall. Guest house is on the first floor. In a triple room the bathroom is built into the sleeping room, so it is understandable why there are reviews about loud toilet. But everything was clean. The room was with three beds and sofa... the last one was very dirty. Good and free WiFi in the room. The bathroom has a liquid soap. TV showed only a few channels (German-speaking). Breakfast was very modest (per person was individually given three trim of cooked sausage and a scrap of cheese; boiled sausages can be taken, you can ask warm milk for cereals or heat it yourself in the microwave, it is given coffee and hot water to tea, fresh rolls and muffins, instead of juice water with the addition of “chemistry” is given. Staff is kind, there was no problems with communication (they speak and understand English and German).
Windows did not closed in the triple room that is not very cozy during frosty nights (the wind comes from the holes) but the heating is good. Soundproofing is missing: it is heard the tram from the street (probably again because of windows), well heard what was going on in the room across the corridor, even with the doors closed. From somewhere came the smell of tobacco permanently. We could see a lot of dust under beds.

Considering how expensive accommodation in Vienna is, this is a fair choice for anyone traveling there, especially if they just need a place to sleep, shower and have breakfast. It's located in an old, run-down building. The guy at the reception was friendly. The room was ok and fairly clean, only the mattress could have been a bit more comfortable. Free WiFi in the whole place. The bathroom was small but good enough. The bathroom's construction, however, is kind of funny. Water comes out of the shower drain when you flush the toilet, and the whole flushing system is terribly noisy. The breakfast is modest, but ok. You get corn flakes, bread, cheese, ham, salami, sausages, marmalade and nutella. It's located some 10 minutes by foot from Schottentor, from where you can reach the city center quite well, and also 7 minute by foot from the subway station Alser Straße, so it's always easy to come back late at night. Overall, it was a fair value for money, considering Vienna's standards. However, if you're the picky type, you might consider other options.

We stayed at Pension Madara in July, 2013.
Overall we thought it was a decent hotel with a good location, but a boring breakfast.

The room was large and quite stylish. The bathroom was slightly simplistic and boring, but large, even though the toilet was quite cramped.
The breakfast was ok but quite poor, the bread was dry and we lacked cold cuts such as cheese, but if you like sweet spreads you won't be disappointed.
The room we had was placed by the inner yard and was insufficiently soundproofed, basically everything that happened there was heard loudly in our bedroom, however, this did not disturb our sleep.
The location was great, just a short walk from the outskirts of historical centre of Vienna.

After reading the reviews wasnt expecting much, but it was much better then expected.

Pros

- Compared to other hotels in Vienna it is very well priced.
- Room we stayed in was huge! Was like an apartment. ( Stayed in room with private bathroom )
- Staff are friendly.
- Breakfast was okay and included in price.
- Perfect hotel for travelers and people on a budget.
- Tram stop is close by.

Cons

- As good as staff are, non of them spoke a word of English.
- Room was very poorly decorated and old fashioned.
- Quite spooky at night as reception is closed and it is quite dark.
- Quite a walk from center, around 25 minutes if you don't use a tram.
- Funny smell in hotel.

Chose Pension Madara because of location, price, and accommodations for a family of four.
Location is very convenient-- can walk to historic district, but tram stop on same block; metro to train station and other locations just 3 blocks north. Rooms were clean, beds comfortable futon style. Rooms are not air conditioned and oscillating fan was provided but windows open to very noisy street which made sleep difficult.
Place needs a little work, cracked windows patched with cardboard, and the bathrooms do stink as other reviewers have mentioned.
Nice free breakfast of cold meats, cheese, breads, cereals and coffee and juice.
This hotel would be great as a backpacker/student accommodation, for folks used to more upscale accommodation I think you will be disappointed.
