Schmetterling Haus Wien is a small butterfly house in an awesome location. It is situated in the Hofburg complex between the Burgarten and the Albertina, alongside the Palmenhaus restaurant. When competing on location, it is a clear winner.
Inside, Schmetterlinghaus is a tropical centre. It is nice, with lots of bold green plants as well as plenty of fake ones for the butterflies to enjoy. The water feature including a waterfall is pleasing. As it is tropical it is quite hot. Heading in on a cold day is an easy way to warm up but it can be quite a stark temperature difference. The free coat rack comes highly recommended.
The price is fairly reasonable. €6 for an adult. Free entry under the age of three.
The path around the house is ok. It is not beautiful but works well. The footing is sure though overtaking opportunities are limited. The bridge vantage point is not especially well maintained, the slight magnification in the glass on the bridge is clever but not clean enough.
The butterflies themselves are fine. One word of caution - if you are the sort of person who is afraid of butterflies then just do not come in, do not annoy the rest of us by jerking erratically when one flies close to you. There are not huge numbers of butterflies and they are fragile so do expect to see some lying around. For some reason the butterflies were not especially colourful in early March, mainly being black with some splashes of colour. It is not the same as seeing them in a more natural environment.
