“Postcard view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2012

Great view overlooking the city. You can catch a bus from Heiligenstadt (u4) to take you uphill or you can take a walk from Nussdorf.

“Charming but not on a weekday”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2012

When we travel, we often like to zag when everyone else zigs, that is, try not to go during the busiest times/days, so we like to explore during the weekdays when possible. Places like Grizing, Kahlenberg and Nussdorf are obviously best seen Fridays and Saturdays, since most restaurants and wine bars are not open any other day. Call ahead if you want to be sure or take a walk and note the hours. Many places only open from Thursday-Sunday and not every day has the same hours. Many places take cash only (even if you spend 100 Euros on dinner) and some places require a reservation, even if it's not busy.

Obviously, aesthically, this entire area is charming and fun to explore, from the narrow streets to the old, preserved buildings and the views of the winery fields, but you may leave without trying a glass of wine or settling in for light fare if you go on the wrong day.

A tip: there is a Gasthaus about a block from the Nussdorf street tram stop that is open on weekdays and they do not require reservations before 6pm, but it is cash only. It's charming (some of the staff wears lederhosen or wool vests) and the beef soup with noodle is great. They offer the typical Nussdorf/Heiligenstadt wines here, too, and some ice cream for kids.

“Superb views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2012

The No. 38A bus from Heiligenstadt U Bahn station goes to Kahlenberg (also worth stopping off in Grinzing for a walk) The views from the top are superb, over the whole of Vienna. Instead of taking the bus back down you can walk down ino Nussdorf, passing vineyards on the way and easily catch a tram back into the city centre.
