“Delightfully Surprised”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2014

Das Tyrol has a nondescript exterior a commercial section of Mariahilfer Strasse. However, it's location, clever interior décor, sumptuous breakfasts, and extraordinarily helpful staff, more than make up for things. The hotel is a few minutes stroll from the Hofburg palace complex, major art and natural history museums, and major tram and subway lines. The hotel's walls are lined with original artwork. Our room (for three adults) had a large queen bed and a pull out sofa. It was very comfortable, and had a balcony overlooking the street. Everything was very clean, and the bathroom looked more like a showroom model than a working WC. We enjoyed the complimentary coffee machine, honor bar, and the many luxury amenities (robes, slippers, toiletries) that came with the room. Breakfasts were wonderful - eggs to order, and all manner of meats, cheeses, fruit, cereals, yogurt, and pastries. We want particularly to thank Christophe (we hope we are spelling that correctly) at the front desk. He did everything to help us with our visit and make it truly enjoyable.

Room Tip: You might want to ask for a room with a balcony.

do not expect something great, they call themselves as small luxury hotel. I believe it is a very good small hotel, nothing is luxury except the private spa in the ground. the breakfast just ok. the rooms very small.

Dear sergelega,

thank you for taking the time to let us know your opinion about our hotel and for you kind words about our private spa.

Due to the rest of your review we feel the need to clear - as we did already in a further review statement - that we are a 30 rooms 4 star boutique hotel, member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World since 2002 and not a 5 star hotel. The Tyrol is a privately owned hotel with a familiar and charming atmosphere. Maybe it’s also helpfull to know, that „Small Luxury Hotels of the World“ is a sales & marketing association of 520 4 + 5 star hotels worldwide. This could be important to know before booking, sothat guests’s expectations match the hotel reality.

Thank you again and best regards,

Helena Ramsbacher & her team

From the moment we walked through the door, we knew we had picked the right hotel. We were greeted warmly by the gentleman at the front desk (I am embarrassed that I've forgotten his name bc he was incredibly helpful to us.) The art work is beautiful and the lobby and breakfast room feel warm and welcoming.

I review on 3 components: service, location and comfort, and Das Tyrol gets a 5+ on every element.

Service: Front Desk gets a 10! They were so helpful - from getting us a room at the insanely early hour we arrived, to directions, restaurant recommendations, etc. - and also incredibly friendly. They remembered our names and chatted with us every time we came by the desk. This is why we stay in small hotels! I don't want to be anonymous, I want to know the people! The staff in the breakfast room was also fantastic. Attentive, but yet if you wanted to linger over your delicious coffee and read the paper, they just let you be. I could actually write a whole review of the breakfast, but suffice to say there is something for everyone - pastries, breads, fruit, yogurt/muesli, meat, cheese, eggs, fish.. you name it! How to start a vacation morning right? With a mimosa of course!

Location: Terrific. On the edge of the MuseumQuartier, close to the tram and the underground - which are both incredibly easy to navigate - and walking distance to everything really. Vienna is very small, and if you like to walk, you can honestly do everything on foot from the hotel. As an aside: We foolishly bought tickets for a hop on/hop off tour and realized after 10 minutes that we'd wasted our money. The street running up to the hotel is very commercial and on it you will find a Spar grocery store, banks, cafes (Starbucks if you are so inclined, but in Vienna, why?) within 2-3 blocks. We enjoyed a walk through the large home goods store directly across from the hotel.

Comfort: Again, this hotel scores off the charts. Our room was small, but so well laid out that the two of us (50 year old & 20 year old) did not feel cramped in the least. The beds were divine, as were the linens and the pillows. The bathroom was very well equipped - my only desire would have been a tub. The Nespresso was a wonderful addition. One hint: it was a bit warm in the room so I wanted to open a window. Unfortunately, there were 40 MPH gusts that day so this became a problem. On the last day, I was fussing with the window again, and discovered that if you turn the handle upwards, you can crack the window from the top. Problem solved!

I did use the little spa and loved it. I spent a very happy hour steaming and baking myself and then just relaxing with the fish in the beautiful aquarium. Even if you do not partake of the spa, I encourage you to go take a peek as it's lovely.

I'd like to address a few of the comments here about the word "Luxury" in the hotel's name. First of all, it's in the name bc they are part of the Small Luxury Hotels group. Second, luxury is in the eye of the beholder. Luxury can mean palatial rooms and opulence, or it can mean excellent service with an eye towards all the details. If you like a small, intimate hotel experience, you will love this hotel and it will feel luxurious.

This hotel offers such a nice location with a motivated and nice staff that doesnt shy away from confrontations. The hotel has a nice breakfast menu that really gives you something for the price your paying and doesnt let you down in that respect.

This is a small but very nice hotel on the edge of the Museum Quarter. As such, it was quiet but still conveniently located. Our room had all the amenities you would expect in a luxury hotel (Nespresso machine, safe, cable, minibar). The bed was very comfortable. The staff was helpful with good restaurant recommendations. Breakfast was very good, with eggs made to order. And they have a sauna/steam room available by reservation. Highly recommended.

Loved Das Tyrol--the hotel had a great ambiance due to wonderful collection of funky modern art found throughout the hotel. The staff was very helpful--particularly with finding a close by ski resort. Highly recommend
