We ended up at Cafe-Restaurant Winter on our first day in Vienna, following a tip from our landlady. We couldn't have been more pleased, and Winter has become our "go-to" and default eatery here.
Winter is a small place on busy Alser Strasse, with sidewalk tables under an awning and two small rooms inside. The decor and the atmosphere is very "old Vienna", with a most genial host. (Beware: If you are a couple 'of a certain age', Herr Winter will flirt outrageously with the wife and ignore the husband. But all in good fun.)
Winter has a pretty standard Vienna menu, with two daily special meals offered each day. On that first visit, my wife had one of those, which included a delicious Rindsbouillon (which Winter makes from the water in which his Tafelspitz is prepared), Zweibelrostbraten with mashed potatoes, and a green salad. I had two bratwurst with roasted potatoes and a noteworthy cabbage salad. On subsequent visits, our fare had included an excellent (and large!) Wienerschnitzel, apfelstruedel, and topfenstrudel (both strurdels are house specialties). The topfenstrudel taken 20 minutes to fix. We were willing to wait and were well rewarded, but you can order it when you order your meal.
We have eaten there at lunch and dinner (and halfway between) and late at night, and every experience was good. Our late night visit was after a concert at the Mozarthaus and the kitchen was about to close but we were served a couple of good soups, a mozzarella, tomato, and basil plate, an apfelstrudel, and exceptional ice cream.
Winter is open Monday through Friday (except holidays) from 0800 to 2330 (the kitchen closes at 2200, I believe).
Winter now has carry-out (take-away, if you prefer) at a 10 percent discount.
