“Excellent Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2010

This is a beautiful, modern hotel in an old building. We could not have asked for better accomodations. Our room was generous sized, contemporary furnishings, tall ceilings, etched glass headboard, huge flat screen TV, large frosted glass bathroom with separate tub and shower. The shower could have easily held a couple of people at the same time ; it was so big. The temp of the room was perfect. Housekeeping was excellent. The front desk staff and Concierges were smart, friendly and very helpful. The health club had everything from workout equipment, hot tub, pool, sauna, steam room and massage. Their staff was also very friendly and helpful. The small cafe in the hotel "Boulevard Cafe" also had terrific staff and light food all day and that is where we had breakfast most mornings. The main dining room offered a huge buffet each morning but the cost was 28 Euro per person (almost 80 dollars) and if you normally eat lightly at breafast it was defintely poor value. Futher on the day we tried it, the staff seemed overwhelmed and couldn't get us coffee before we had finished eating! That buffet was the only negative we experienced at the hotel. The location of this hotel was also noteworthy: 1 block from Hofburg, 1 block from State Opera, 3 blocks from Musikverein, 1 block from 3 subway lines and a Tram stop. We did everything on public transportation which was efficient and with a wochenkarte 14 Euros for a week of this.Vienna is a great city; we will be back and the Meredien will be our place to stay.

We stayed here for two nights at the end of April, mixing a little bit of business with pleasure. Le Meridien gives a great first impression from the second you arrive, with friendly (and very good looking) staff. The rooms are a decent size; the bathroom is huge and features a real bath (not one of those awful ‘hotel’ baths) as well as a walk-in shower. The chaise long was comfortable and actually made me want to sit in my hotel room for a while – something not many hotels achieve! There are lots of nice touches, including the polite and informative staff, a good gym, free basic wi-fi and a complimentary mini bar (not heavily stocked, but who needs more than some water, coke or a beer from their mini bar?)!

If I’m going to be picky though, a few things niggled slightly (given that the hotel isn’t particularly cheap). i) The room was only made up for one person, despite our reservation being for two. This was rectified pretty quickly and before we had to ask, but unfortunately by a man who had the odour of someone who had been doing a lot of physical labour which dented the image slightly. ii) The walk-in shower was great but as you so often find, the power of it means you get water all over the bathroom leaving you to either do a lot of mopping up, or walking around in a puddle of water. iii) The mattress was far too soft (in my opinion) - I don’t like my feet to be above my head!

That said the location (ten minutes walk to the centre, five minutes to the underground and a few minutes from the museum district) is excellent. The bar is a fun place to have a couple of beers and the hotel’s taxi service from hotel to airport (approx. 44 euros and 20/25 minutes) is well worth it if there are two or three of you. It is also worth mentioning that there is a cinema showing original version films a couple of minutes walk away (which is better than spending 19 Euros to watch a six month old film in your room)!

We didn’t eat in the restaurant, although it looked as trendy as the rest of the hotel and had we stayed another night we would have almost certainly given it a try.

Recommended.

This hotel is fantastic. In general I'm a sucker for Starwood hotels (mostly Westins) so this is not a great surprise. But I got a good deal on this hotel by booking head and it was first class all the way. We came in very early via an overnight train and yet surprisingly our room was ready! It has a bathroom to die for. Complimentary minibar, which was novel and cool, and fresh apples in the rooms and lobby. The location was also great. The only downside was a guy hanging out behind the concierge desk who then told us he wasn't actually a concierge and gave us terrible directions which sent us on a wild goose chase for a particular restaurant. Overall though, I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else in Vienna.

We needed a room for 3 of us...my husband, and 20 yr old son and decided to prepay for the room. When we arrived they said the cot for my son wasn't ready but they would send it up. We got to the room and it was so HOT ! Tried turning on the air conditioning to cool down the room but it only blew hot air. Called down for help - they send someone up, claimed to have fixed it but the room remained exceptionally warm. When we got back from dinner late that evening, the cot had arrived....when my son went to lie down it fell to the ground cause it was BROKEN....which they obviously knew about because they had attempted to TIE the RUNGs on to the bed...plus the bed frame was twisted !! We took the flimsy mattress off and he slept on the ground...we put the broken frame in the hall. In the morning we complained about the air conditioning again and they promised it would be fixed. Got back to our room around 4pm..and the air conditioning seemed to FINALLY be working...plus they did put a new cot in the room. Again, we left to go out for dinner...arrived back at the hotel around 10:30pm and guess what, the AIRCONDITIONING wasn't working again !! When we called downstairs they told us to open the windows!!!! We did open the windows cause we couldn't stand it anymore....and at 4am...since our room was facing the interior....a bird starting singing for 3 hours.....COULDN"T WAIT TO CHECK OUT>...worst sleep ever...HOT, then Noisy..
If we hadn't prepaid I would have moved over to THE RING HOTEL...
And beware the FUNKY modern bathroom....very hip but NOT VERY FUNCTIONAL....
AND TO make matters worse, one of the reasons we selected the Hotel was because of they had a great gym. But no one tells us when we check in that they are renovating the gym....there was no mention at check-in, nothing on the website, no notice in the room...so when we go down to use the gym..they say...SORRY!!!
Very bad experience...and lousy communication and care of customers

We arrived early in the hotel so we had to wait for our room...2 hours.
We got upgraded to a spacious room facing the street.
Overall our room was ok......although i believe there are things that can be improved, specially in cleaning of the rooms.
But i have to recognise that the help of Virginia (reception)( smile, gentle, helpful) and Ralph (concierge)(very happy to assist us all the time)was the highlight of our stay.

The hotel is well situated on the ring and close to all the major sights in Vienna. We stayed on a room only basis and chose not to have the breakfast there as it was very expensive at 28 euros (although I understand this is the norm in the very expensive city of Vienna!). The room was well appointed (although the bed was a little small for our liking). As with other reviews, the shower - open entrance tends to allow water everywhere in the 'wetroom' bathroom. The self closing wardrobe door is a bit of a nuisance.

The minibar was free of charge and had 2 large bottles of water, two cokes, two fruit juices and one beer. For the three nights we stayed it was restocked. It could do with a mirror over the dressing table. The aircon worked poorly and our room was too hot so we resorted to turning it off and opening the windows, which meant we had to sleep with earplugs.

You have stainless steel cups and saucers, which were not cleaned properly and were not nice to drink from.

The air system did not seem to work in the bathroom, so getting rid of steam etc, was a problem.

The pool/gym area in the basement was pretty nice. The pool was small but had a swim against jet. The jaccuzzi and steam/sauna areas were good. I did not use the gym but it looked okay.

They occasionally leave fresh apples in your room, but if not you can pick them up from a table next to reception.

We did not use the funky looking bar, as it was too smoky for us (being non-smokers). Smoking is still allowed in dining and bar areas, which we think ought to change to non smoking in such a forward looking city as Vienna.

For breakfast we would recommend the glasshouse cafe/restaurant across the Burggarten (which is just across the road from the hotel). Very clean and reasonably priced for Vienna.

Getting to the hotel from the airport, we would recommend the S Bahn to Rennweg then tram 71 to Lothringer, then tram D to the Opera House. Then it is a 100m walk in the same direction to the hotel.

The trams 1 and 2 will take you right round the ring and walking around the old city is very easy.

Overall, a nice hotel.

Hi All,
I stayed in Le Meridien over the bank holiday weekend. The hotel is ideally located close to all the tourist attractions of Vienna and tram/sub stations. We only had to walk couple of minutes and we were in heart of Vienna.
The reception on arrival was warm and welcoming, they gave us an upgrade. The room had complimentary fridge facilities, fresh fruit , and water on arrival. The room was very modern and we loved the rain shower in bathroom.
The breakfast was included in our deal and was a nice spread. Again the staff working in breakfast room were very friendly and warm.I had asked for coffee and the waiter spilled it little while serving it and was ever so apologetic that he came back twice to ask me that he would change the cup.The only negative thing about breakfast was that we arrived at around 10.30 one day and most of the breads were finished. Though they were topping up cereals and other stuff but even after asking the did not top up on breads.
Overall, its a very nice place to stay. If I go to Vienna again, I would be happy to stay in the hotel again.
