This hotel is an absolute delight, charming in just every way. It is located in an interesting old building that I supposed initially to be a former "great Viennese house" (I was wrong, the story is rather more interesting than that). The staff are extremely welcoming and friendly, mainly quite young, very willing to do whatever to make your stay enjoyable. We had a wonderful room with four poster bed, tons of space, huge bathroom (only minor negative, impossible to dry your hair in front of a mirror). Breakfasts were huge and plentiful with wonderful Viennese breads and pastries, eggs to order, fruit, yoghurt, cereal, sparkling wine for those who can bear to at that time of day, and all those incomprehensible breakfast items like radishes, olives, pickles etc - I have yet to learn which nationality it is that eats those things at 8am. As other reviewers have mentioned there is a very nice complimentary tea in the afternoon, worth getting back for at least once. By then you should have walked so much round this jaw-droppingly beautiful city that you will be glad of a nice cup of tea, slice of homemade cake and a sit down in the cosy lounge area. Vienna is a fabulous city (we caught the amazing Christmas markets) and you will eat and drink as well as anywhere in Europe and not at greater expense either. The Viennese are more friendly than I had expected and all speak excellent English. The only downside - and it really was a pain for us - is that in a great many bars and restaurants smoking is still permitted. If the establishment is smaller than a certain size then the whole place can be smoking (a bit counter-intuitive that, but anyway) while in bigger establishments an area can be designated for smokers. On our first evening my husband and I went to about 10 bars, many of which we would have LOVED to go in for a drink as they looked very inviting, but were chased away on the threshold by a wall of smoke (well it felt like that to us, now spoilt by several years of the smoking ban in the UK). This is where the Hotel Altstadt scored again. We went back to the delightful, intimate and cosy lounge bar, almost like being in someone's lovely house or a private members' club, and enjoyed a glass of very reasonably priced Austrian Blaufrankisch red. No smoke there, not a trace. If you are going to Vienna, the convenient and slighly quirky location of the Altstadt, together with the friendly welcome, stylish surroundings and excellent service, is a fine choice. We would go back in a heartbeat.
