“one of our favourite stays of recent years”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2013 via mobile

This hotel is an absolute delight, charming in just every way. It is located in an interesting old building that I supposed initially to be a former "great Viennese house" (I was wrong, the story is rather more interesting than that). The staff are extremely welcoming and friendly, mainly quite young, very willing to do whatever to make your stay enjoyable. We had a wonderful room with four poster bed, tons of space, huge bathroom (only minor negative, impossible to dry your hair in front of a mirror). Breakfasts were huge and plentiful with wonderful Viennese breads and pastries, eggs to order, fruit, yoghurt, cereal, sparkling wine for those who can bear to at that time of day, and all those incomprehensible breakfast items like radishes, olives, pickles etc - I have yet to learn which nationality it is that eats those things at 8am. As other reviewers have mentioned there is a very nice complimentary tea in the afternoon, worth getting back for at least once. By then you should have walked so much round this jaw-droppingly beautiful city that you will be glad of a nice cup of tea, slice of homemade cake and a sit down in the cosy lounge area. Vienna is a fabulous city (we caught the amazing Christmas markets) and you will eat and drink as well as anywhere in Europe and not at greater expense either. The Viennese are more friendly than I had expected and all speak excellent English. The only downside - and it really was a pain for us - is that in a great many bars and restaurants smoking is still permitted. If the establishment is smaller than a certain size then the whole place can be smoking (a bit counter-intuitive that, but anyway) while in bigger establishments an area can be designated for smokers. On our first evening my husband and I went to about 10 bars, many of which we would have LOVED to go in for a drink as they looked very inviting, but were chased away on the threshold by a wall of smoke (well it felt like that to us, now spoilt by several years of the smoking ban in the UK). This is where the Hotel Altstadt scored again. We went back to the delightful, intimate and cosy lounge bar, almost like being in someone's lovely house or a private members' club, and enjoyed a glass of very reasonably priced Austrian Blaufrankisch red. No smoke there, not a trace. If you are going to Vienna, the convenient and slighly quirky location of the Altstadt, together with the friendly welcome, stylish surroundings and excellent service, is a fine choice. We would go back in a heartbeat.

We enjoyed four lovely days at the Alstadt, well-located with a short walk to major sites. How can you not have a splendid day when it begins with a breakfast of Mimosas, excellent hot breakfast entrees made to order, delicious breads, fruits, and beverage of your choice all served efficiently and graciously! We looked forward to our beautiful breakfasts each day which were served in four different style rooms.

The staff is friendly and helpful, offering good recommendations for dinner and making reservations. You feel as if you are in a top Viennese hotel, not a chain hotel where you could be anywhere in the world. Our room was large with a clean, well-appointed bathroom with helpful shelving units, divine soaps and hand lotions (I so loved the hand lotion that my dear husband actually bought me a large container of it upon our return home!). Our room also had a refrigerator and wash cloths were provided, an appreciated touch.

Our room was on the 4th floor overlooking a side street and was very quiet. There are double windows that open as well as double doors leading to the hallway. These act as excellent noise insulators. I loved the fact that our room overlooked the church (St. Ulrichs) in which Johann Strauss was baptized. The hotel should make this known; for those of us who love his music, this is nice to know!

We enjoyed having tea with homemade strudels between 4 and 6 P.M., which was a pleasant lift after a long day of walking and touring. My wish would be to be able to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee before bed after returning from dinner, but that was not available.

The only thing that I did not appreciate was the garish artwork on the walls along the areas leading to our rooms and also inside the rooms. It is horribly depressing with barbed wire and unattractive people's faces; I hated being met by this whenever we walked in. It was so out of keeping with the excellent amenities of the hotel and the kind and friendly staff. PLEASE replace these wall hangings with some nice photography of sites in Vienna!

We would return!

Dear SailingLa!

Thank you very much for staying at the Altstadt on your recent visit to Vienna and for taking the time to provide us with your feedback concerning your experience in our house.

We are most happy to hear that you have enjoyed your stay with us and especially for mentioning all the little details you have appreciated, not to forget your wonderful comments referring to the staff. Very motivating indeed!

In regards to the artwork we always know it is a matter of taste and we would have been more than happy to replace it during the time of your stay. It would have also been a pleasure to serve you tea or coffee after returning from dinner either in the Salon or by calling roomservice to your room.

Last but not least we are most thankful for pointing out that Johann Strauss has been baptized in the opposite St Ulrichs church. A fact we have to shamefully confess we were not aware of and will definetely be gone after!

Once again thank you very much for your support and we are looking forward to welcoming again!

The Altstadt is perfectly located near the Museum Quarter. We stayed for two night in early November in a standard classic room (58) and could not have been happier. The hotel staff went out of their way to welcome us. Our room was spacious with a huge bed and plenty of storage. The bathroom was snug but fully equipped with lovely Occitane toiletries. We loved the warmth and intimate feel of the hotel, the wonderful breakfasts and the luxury of the afternoon tea service. Compared to the bigger chain hotels, this hotel felt very special - carefully designed, quiet, personable and a wonderful refuge after a busy day in the city. We were close to excellent bars and restaurants - recommended by the front desk - and were made to feel like valued guests. We will return.

We stayed at the Hotel Altstadt in late October 2013 based on the TripAdvisor Reviews. We were not disappointed!

In looking at maps of Vienna, it seemed like the Altstadt was a bit out of the way, but that concern disappeared once we were there. While we enjoy walking anywhere we go, there is no absence of public transportation nearby for those who choose not to walk, both tram and Metro. While the hotel is officially in the Museum District, it is about a twelve-minute casual walk to the Hofburg and 5 minutes more to Stephansplatz. It is located in a residential area with a view of St. Ulrich's Church from the front of the building.

The staff at the Reception could not have been more helpful. They provided pre-printed recommendations for hotels in the area, along with a map showing where they were. I think there were about 8 within a few blocks of the hotel; we selected three and each was excellent. They also give you a booklet apparently written by the owner with countless restaurant recommendations all over Vienna, which was also fascinating.

The breakfast offering is excellent and among the best we have experienced in all of Europe. Unlike many hotel breakfast restaurants, eggs, bacon, etc. are cooked to order in their kitchen rather than sitting in steam trays. The breakfast starts in a grand hallway with a bottle of Prosecco to blend with your orange juice to get your day started in the right manner!

The rooms are set along long hallways in a building shared with other residents. This is not an issue, since the hotel room hallways are locked and available only to residents. Our room was a basic double, and faced Kirchengasse. I had read about some folks having an issue with noise, but we slept with the window ajar and had no problems. There is more noise on the street during the day, but nothing to disturb us. Our room had about 12' ceilings and was generous in size with a large sofa, desk, TV, and two side tables with high-intensity reading lamps. The bathroom was classic in style and had enough room for two to share.

Room prices were fair for Vienna - you have to recognize that Vienna is a very expensive city.

We would gladly stay at the Altstadt on a future trip.

Within walking distance of a train station and all the museums lies this wonderful little boutique hotel. I can add the same thing that countless reviewers have written here...great location, beautiful rooms, (AC not so powerful but i guess it is to be expected in Europe)...What made it special for us though was we stayed 5 nights in June 2013 broken as two visits of 2 and 3 nights each...they kept the same room for us so it was like coming home. The staff is very friendly and the service is great. My luggage was lost and they helped call Air France and kept in communication with me as i was out and about sightseeing. Breakfast if fabulous too. Highly recommend this place.

I'm so glad that I could be back in Vienna, mostly because that means I can stay in this charming, eclectic hotel again. Staff are invariably friendly and helpful, whether it's for finding a restaurant that you'd enjoy, connecting up with sights, etc. I like the fact that no two rooms are the same; this place is loaded with personality and style! The location is good, too -- just a few minutes walk to U-Bahn, tram and bus connections to link you with the First District and all other regions of Vienna. If you're more interested in staying in a one-of-a-kind hotel, this should be your first search. (Reserve early, as they have a big regulars list here.)

A very fine hotel and within walking distance of the centre of Vienna. It is a conversion of an old apartment and just shows how grand the old apartments were – lovely staircase, high ceilings, no very high ceilings, large bedrooms, stylish doors. What really stood out though were the absolutely brilliant breakfasts with everything available (try the delicious German-style rye bread), and the (free) afternoon teas with fabulous cake, starting at 4pm but still available after 5. Makes one think that the Viennese know how to live well
