“Fun place to stay but a few problems”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2009

The rooms had been renovated recently; the description from 2004 no longer applies. They're airy and spacious. This is more like a bed-and-breakfast than a hotel; there's a breakfast room (food was more than decent) but no restaurant. You don't need one; the Spittelberg section starts on the next block and is full of nice places to eat. The hotel is apparently managed by the family that owns it, and they bend over backwards to accommodate guests. It's a good place to stay if you have an infant (which we did). There are some caveats to consider:
1) The rooms aren't air conditioned (true of most of Vienna in general). They did cool off fast enough at night with the windows open, but then it's noisy from the traffic.
2) The wireless Internet is the WPA standard. Older computers using the WEP standard can't connect. The personnel were nice about letting us use the office computer to get online, though.

My wife and I just visited Vienna for the first time and we booked a room at Hotel pension museum because of the location and the price. I was wondering what we would get after reading the previous reviews about this place. You can expect some of what other writers stated; It is on the second floor and you have to go up some stairs to get to the small lift - but it is in a neat building right off of Ringstrasse (the main circle around the historic part of Vienna) and it is right acroos from the meuseum quarter.

Some of the furniture is a little old (as is often the case in a B&B), but very unique and different. The rooms are large and the bathroom had all newer fixtures and was actually very nice. It is NOTHING like a holiday inn as one reader wrote. There is no pre fab mass produced feeling, and there is original art in every room. This is why (as one other writer questioned) it is a favorite for many Europeans spending a week end in Vienna.

Other huge pluses were the breakfast, the staff, and the price for the location.
Don't look at the picture and expect a grand hotel, what it is it is a fantastic B&B on one floor of an old Baroque european building (which is shown in the picture). If you want a nice big room in a great location with out paying too too much (w/ a great breakfast added in) this place is a great find.

Ok if you want to be near the museums in Vienna, but as hotels go I thought it was very overpriced.
The reception lady was nice enough, but I found the rooms to be ugly and boring and a bit too cold. The television only had 4 channels, which was a disappointment also.
Not a bad hotel, but I wouldn't want to stay here for a holiday or for any more than one night.

Spent three nights in October of 2005 at this pension. If you want to be next to the Museum Quarter in Vienna with a two minute walk to the Fine Art museum, Natural History Museum and the New Museum Quarter then this is the place to stay. Be sure to ask for a corner room. We had room 34 which was spacious, really quite large. The room opened onto a wrap-around balcony with views of Vienna and even the spire of St. Stephen's church. Yes, the furniture is a bit funky but this is so unimportant as to not be a factor in determining if a stay here is appropriate. The breakfast was substantial with meat, rolls, yogurt, breads, coffee, butter and jam--more than enough to get you off to a good start. The museum quarter is in fact a central location in Vienna, but a bit to the northwest of the too touristy Kartnerstrasse. The pension is serviced by 2 seperate u-bahn stops within 30 seconds of the pension. A tram stop is just down the block. You want to walk to the Hofburg? It's a 10 minute walk through the plaza of the Fine Art Museum. The Ringstrasse? It's five minute slow walk. From the airport? Take the CAT train to Wein Mitte station and then the u-bahn to Volkstheater stop and walk 30 seconds. How about a real Vienna Cafe without the tourists and tourist prices.? Try Cafe Raymound which has been there for over 200 years...just on the other side of the Volkstheater which is literally under your bedroom window. Fresh Schnitzel with potato salad and beer for 7.5 euros. And they are open to midnight. 121 euros/night.

Stayed here May 2004. Dumpy. If your gross quotient falls somewhere between a Hojo's and a Holiday Inn this place is not for you. The reviews in Fodors and Frommers were so positive but I think undeserving. First of all, you walk into what is now a quasi office building - the hallways are extremely dark, there is a huge hole in the wall with exposed pipes. The pension itself - on the 3rd floor - smells like mothballs and the carpet is stained and worn as is the furniture; the old walls have been painted one too many times. As for the room itself, spare old furniture but okay - this is a pension. But cracked paint on the walls, ripped sheets, a bug in the bathroom, broken safe, etc. If you close your eyes you can imagine how gorgeous this place was 200 years ago - high ceilings, pretty city views. To be fair, the location is excellent - Across the street from the museums and a block away from Spittleberg where the shops are cute and the restaurants are yummy. The subway is across the street too and the center of the city is only a 10 minute walk. Vienna is expensive and maybe you just get what you pay for. We payed 150 USD/nt. The staff is extremely nice and the breakfast was good. We were surprised by the fact that the other guests were a pretty sophisticated crowd (not American) - something we did not expect given how badly this place is in need of a renovation.
