Having been recommended to try the Schick hotels group by a colleague based in Vienna, I stayed 3 nights at the Hotel Capricorno in a Single Economy room while visiting the city for the Christmas markets.
First major plus for hotel is the location. Arriving on the Vienna Lines airport bus into Schwedenplatz/Morzinplatz bus stop you can see the hotel and its about a 5 minute walk (pulling a suitcase). The u-bahn underground station, Schwedenplatz is within 50m of the hotel and alongside this is a tram stop. (The tourist Ring Tram also leaves from here and its a great way to familiarise yourself with the city.)
The hotel occupies the first and second floors of a larger building with a small reception area on the ground floor, which during our stay always seemed to be manned by the ever helpful Hassan. On checking in, my sister and I were allocated rooms on the second floor next to one another, however I found my room to smell strongly of cigarette smoke, so left the window open whilst I was out. On my return the smell hadnt dissipated so I asked to be moved and Hassan instantly obliged and allocated me a non smoking room on the first floor. Not being familiar with the smoking laws around Europe I hadnt thought of the need to request a non smoking room, so consider this if booking.
The single rooms are just that, single bed, desk/dressing table and chair, with a wall mounted flat screen tv and a well apointed bathroom with shower cubicle, The wardrobe contained enough hanging space (and coat hangers) along with drawers, shelving and a digital safe for valuables. Even the hairdryer in the bathroom was a usuable one, and I had packed my own having experienced hotel hairdryers in the past!
Breakfast was served in a small breakfast room on the first floor, only a few steps from my room, but this didnt cause me any inconvenience through noise in the mornings. Breakfast is a selection with cheese, meats, cereal, fruit, yoghurt, pastries and bread. They also served scrambled and boiled eggs and sausages. I managed to vary my selection across the three mornings so no complaints at all there.
The hotel has no bar or restaurant of its own, but there are several bars and restaurants in the area and everything is within walking distance. As well as local Viennese cafes in abundance!
If there was one down side to the hotel, it was the heat in the bedrooms, with no heating on! The outside temperature was in the minus figures, so I was leaving the window open all day to chill the room in order to sleep at night. I would normally leave a window open at night, but due to the proximity of the main road, this isnt possible. It was a manageable down side and certainly wouldnt put me off booking again, which I certainly will as I anticipating a return to Vienna.
