Hotel Kunsthof is situated in a rather ugly part of Vienna, but has the advantage of being only a few hundred meters away from the public transport hub Praterstern. Gathering from the name of this hotel (“art court” in English) that this is a design hotel would be mistaken. In fact, this is a fairly old hotel, formerly called Reichshof. It offers a wide variety of rooms whose sizes and prices differ. I had booked an X-SMALL room, which turned out not to be smaller than a typical single room.
Knowing that the street noise at night can be a nuisance in Vienna, I was willing to pay 10 euros extra per night for a so-called upgrade to an “inside room”. In this way I was really spared the street noise. However, this provided no protection against noise originating from the adjacent rooms and from the corridor, since sound insulation in this hotel is very poor, at least in the rear part where my room was situated.
My room was far from stylish. The quality of the basic furniture was not bad, but an arm-chair and a wardrobe of unsuitable colors and some accessories of the cheapest kind gave the room a somewhat run-down appearance. Particularly unappealing in this respect was the bathroom, which was in need of renovation. I encountered some minor nuisances there such as a largely clogged shower head. Furthermore, in my opinion the light in the bathroom was far too weak and I also missed a reading light at the desk. The mattress seemed to be fairly old and was not in a good condition.
I found the breakfast alright because the breakfast buffet, though not particularly comprehensive, contained all the basics one may usually expect and it was not overpriced. The friendly hotel staff gave no reason for complaint.
Despite this not very enthusiastic review I consider an overall classification by three stars justified given that Hotel Kunsthof is quite moderately priced by Viennese standards.
The upgrade to an “inside room” is money well spent, but try to get a room in the main building rath...
