Late September 2008, we went to Vienna, to visit my mother. We were three adults and two small children. We had booked on-line an apartment at Hotel Allegro (formerly Hotel Amarante), located at Matzleinsdorferplatz, about 10 minutes from downtown by street car. It is located close to one of the main railroad lines though the noise was not very noticeable. The apartment was at the 5th floor (European style; i.e., 6th floor U.S. style), split level (with a terrace at the upper level), very nice, reasonably priced. Problem was: the elevator only goes up to the 4th floor, so we had to carry up our luggage (10 pieces) one more floor. Breakfast is included, with a fairly wide selection of items. Receptionists were generally very accommodating. Room personnel was kind of rude, unpleasant, an attitude found in many places in Vienna.
