“good location, great staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2010

Ended up in Vienna dur to not being able to fly to Porto due to the ash cloud, party of three couples arriving in Vienna with no where to stay !!

After getting the train from the airport to the city, the Arenberg was the first hotel we came upon, I know from past experience the Best Western hotels can be very hit ans miss but we needed the peace of mind of getting beds for the nigh t!! so it was worth a try

The staff could not do enough for us and after negotiating we ended up with three rooms for three night b@b at a very fair price for a hotel in its location.

Hotels in Vienna and certainly within the 'gold ring' seem to be very expensive.

Yes the rooms where all varied, on the first night we could only get a triple room, one double and a single, the single [no views] was very small and the double on the second floor [room 22] also no view] was also on the small side. The triple [room 16]wa a suite looking to the front of the of the building with good views, this room was very nice and quiet but the bathroom was dated.

On the second night the staff made another double available [room10 also a good view] this was also a good size room to the front of the hotel.

In summary. Rooms can be a hit or miss, most need some up-dating, hotel is in great location, staff were just great nothing was to much for them, breakfast substantial although the breakfast room was small.

recommend rooms 10/15/or 16

For a very good restaurant, turn left out of the hotel building and first left again, the first restaurant on the left is the place to go, limited menu but the food is fresh and good size portions are given.

Stayed there just for one night, but i got a room next to the reception...so everyone passed my room...very noisy and also very small, i had a single room, but was the smallest single room i have ever had. It is possible, that other rooms may be better, but not mine. The breakfast was ok, i think every breakfast in Vienna is perfect (because of the fresh Kaiser bread:-) ). The staff was nice when i arrived in the evening, but the next day in the morning threre was somebody else...awful...it takes long time till i got my bill, and the woman had probably a bad mood.

Hotel is on a walking distance from underground. Interestingly built inside a building from early 1900's, it feels like going to someone's house or castle. Room was small but big enough for one person to turn around. Decent continental breakfast. Perfect for staying one or two nights on a business trip, otherwise I would consider something more modern.

This was not a very impressive place when you compare it with the other best western hotels. Rooms were neat but smaller than i expected. Proximity to station was the advantage and the reason to book this place, its a 5min walk. The staff was nice and helpful.

Needed a hotel room quick, w/o a reservation. This hotel met my expectations and then some! Relatively inexpensive, I think I paid 70 euros for the room, which was very big!
Free breakfast was unexpected, and quite the smorgasbord!

Then you'll love the archaic internet service that barely if ever works, but will cost you 14 Euros a day, even though their website says it's for free. There's a sign in the room, they will tell you angrily, which clearly states that is only for the first 24 hours! Of course, you can't see that damn sign from America when you book the room because it's not visible on the internets. I'm not sure they understand how the interwebs work.

You can't even use the computer in the lobby without paying the 14 Euros, and believe me: it does not work well. It's an ancient coax cable line that looks like it's probably from the 1990s, and the hotel bandwidth is probably pretty good for 2-3 connections max, based the online bandwidth test I ran out of curiosity. It doesn't work at all at peak times in the evenings and morning. You will be considering yourself VERY lucky if you can pull more than 14.4 most of the time. It's ridiculous. Incredible time waster if you're traveling on business or on a long trip and need the net to stay in touch with home/office/other hotels/make travel plans/etc. I think I lost at least an hour a day, probably more like 2, total. Just screwing around with it. Unless you're running Win98, get ready for compatibility problems.

Lower floors may be able to cop a T-Mobile connection from a nearby cafe.

You'll flip for the 20 Euro breakfast buffet that fits on a small kitchen table. You'll be absolutely gaga for the rude, hostile, entitled, snobby middle-aged front desk doyenne and head housekeeper, and feel genuine sympathy for the young women who are working under them. This hotel certainly HAD a heyday. But that day was 50 years ago, and the hotel has not been updated since. At all. In any way. The hairdryer in the room is vintage 1963, maybe 1964. They could probably sell some of the stuff in the hotel for vintage, but it will be another 50 years before it's actually antiques.

My particular room had a giant chandelier hanging with a clearance of exactly 5'10 under it. I'm 5'8 barefoot. I clocked myself on the chandelier repeatedly and was terrified of doing a morning stretch or taking off a sweater unless I was standing out in the hallway, lest I catch a sleeve or something else on it and end up pulling the whole mess down. In addition to the chandelier, there were tracklights in the ceiling. It was blindingly bright in there and no way to selectively turn off any of it, and the bedside lamp was little more than a nightlight. Not good.

Inexpensive minibar fridge in the lobby was a good value.

Very good location on the tramline that runs straight into the center of town, everything is also walkable.

I'd say that a double room is probably worth around 60 Euros, maybe 70. If you're paying more than that, consider this: after you pay 18 for the crappy breakfast and 14 for the crappy internet and 4-8 a day for the tram and train fares, you could have stayed in a hotel room that cost another 40 Euros and probably got free, good wireless, a free, good breakfast, and a closer location at an overall nicer hotel that doesn't always stink to high heaven of cigarettes - and paid the same amount. They kill you on the extras here, unless you're willing to put up one hell of a fight every single day about the damn internet.

Also, NOTE: laundromats don't really exist in Vienna. I've heard there's one in a southerly suburb outside of the ring. Most hotels will provide guest laundromats. This one will charge you to DEATH to do each piece, and I'm pretty sure they don't use any soap. I paid 20 Euros to get 2 pairs of socks, a t-shirt, and a pair of jeans washed. 20 Euros. You're a hostage to that sort of thing at this hotel.

My advice is to book somewhere else. Some kinds of cheap end up being REALLY expensive.

Total waste of money!
The hotel is max 2 star hotel (they say it's 4 stars).

It's unclean, noisy (you can hear your neighbors breathing, the floor is noisy), the service is unfriendly, the traffic noise outside is loud, there was no water for 4 hours, etc…
