This is one of my regular haunts in Vienna for great food and beer. But the menu has gone downhill of late. Why? The lower priced food is off the menu and on my last visit the house speciality Stern Pfanne -which is a pan full of meat and noodles covered in cheese for Euro14 turned out to have very little meat and more noodles than I could ingest. Shape up guys!!

“Loud and Lively. Good Food and Beer!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2013

Popped into this place on a whim, about 7pm, and found it almost packed with people eating and drinking already! Although it was full, the busy waiter found us a table with no problems. We sat in a corner section with other people and were swept away with the atmosphere. The waiters were rushed off their feet, but they were very aware of us and brought the menus within 5 minutes. We asked about the beers (this place has it's own brewery on site) and were informed about all the different ones they had. We chose the Dunkle, dark) half litre sized each and asked for time to pick our food; There was plenty of choice, but in the end, (being hungry) we settled on the sharing meat platter for 25 euros. As it was busy, we didn't mind waiting, and enjoyed our brews and the atmosphere.
When the table's orders next to us arrived, we laughed at the faces on the people when they saw the size of their meals and their comments. Little did we know.............
Our beers finished, the waiter came over and we ordered another two, well, why waste time staring into space. Then just as we got into those, OUR order arrived. It was HUGE!
Wiener schnitzel, ribs, sausages, pork, chicken, fries, onions, cabbage, with mustard and another sauce (sorry couldn't place the flavour, but it was nice) on a large platter and two large plates. The waiter laughed at our faces and told us "Enjoy"
It took us a good three quarter hour to work our way through it all, but finish it we did! and all the time wondering how Austrians kept so slim!
Of course we had to refuse dessert and more dunkles, much to the amusement of the waiter, we were absolutely full.
Our total bill came to about 40 euros including tip.
Good plentiful food, great choice of home brews, and a wonderful lively atmosphere all made for a brilliant evening out. Can't wait to return!

“Our favorite in Vienna!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2013 via mobile

We've been backpacking so we were looking for a mid-price place to eat and boy this place was perfect. We went twice.

It's crowded but warm and cozy. You really feel like you're in a local dig even if there are several other tourists.

The food was great. We had the garlic cream soup, which was superb, and the knuckle of pork, also fantastic.

The beer was also good. I had the red beer and it was really good. Much better than some of the other beer I've had at similarly priced places.

For those complaining about supposedly "poor service", we didn't have that problem at all. Perhaps people are just used to the way it is in the US with overly an painfully cheerful servers constantly in your face so you tip them. Not so here! The servers let you sit back and enjoy your meal and drinks.

I would definitely recommend to anyone staying in Vienna.

“Awesome food, beer & service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

This place was on the fella's beer list for Vienna, and now I know why. He was pretty darn excited by the variety of beers and inventiveness (hemp beer! spicy chili beer!), and I was pretty darn excited about their spaetzel, schnitzel and strudel.

It's in a great location near the train - we hopped off and walked maybe 7 minutes to get there - and the place itself is pretty cool. There's a beer vending machine in the entrance (great idea), and the main room has a bar that seems bright (I think there was a skylight) with really neat copper tanks. We decided to grab a table instead of sitting in the bar area, and the place felt really cozy with wooden chairs/tables and exposed brick that was decorated with numerous beer coasters. Our waiter spoke enough English that I could sufficiently stuff my face, and he was attentive.

One of my favorite places we visited in Vienna!

“Food disgusting...avoid”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

Too much paprika in the goulash and cheese spaetzle was drowning in cheese. Sad to say their only redeeming dish was a beef broth soup which could easily be matched by one out of a can. The waiters could use a lesson or two on service too. There's gotta be better in Vienna...
