“Classically Grand”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2014

This Hotel is situated in an ideal location to see all the tourist landmarks in the Innere Strad district of Vienna, Austria.
The rooms are in style befitting Vienna, the staff are friendly and speak excellent English.
The buffet breakfast is excellent, room service is excellent.
Highly recommended.

Elegant and classic, this is the perfect European "grand" Hotel! Lovely room, friendly, helpful staff, and the perfect location! My husband attended a conference during the days, so I was on my own navigating the city. Hotel de France is right on the Ringstrasse, just cross the street and step on the trolley, go round and round, hop on hop off to your hearts content! Underground station on the nearer corner, easy to get around! Breakfast buffet at the hotel was fabulous, and all facilities were clean and comfortable. Our room was a little too warm, even for February, but we were able to open a window (nice) and staff adjusted our thermostat as soon as we asked them to. We would definitely choose Hotel de France if we are fortunate enough to return to Vienna someday!

·From the moment I checked in I was made feel very welcome, most important at any time but especially when travelling solo. I was celebrating a significant birthday on the day, January 1st, that I arrived and I was upgraded to a junior suite by the duty manager, who was also celebrating her birthday that day. Viel Dank, Frau Mrziek! On returning from dinner later that evening, I was greeted by a special birthday cake with birthday wishes from the hotel - a lovely gesture. Staff in all areas were very professional and spoke excellent English. They were helpful and proactive at all times. The breakfast buffet was vast and varied. How civilised to finish your breakfast with a glass of sparkling wine!! I got very used to that! The hotel's restaurant - No. 3 - was nicely appointed and offered good value, as well as good variety for vegetarians like myself. The Red Beetroot Risotto was one of the best risottos I have ever tasted. My waitress, the wonderful Sophie looked after me very well over a number of nights. Danke Sophie! The Atrium Bar was beautifully appointed with its fabulous chandeliers, old world charm and piano player - the perfect location for a G&T after dinner. The hotel complex includes a cinema, just around the corner, where English language films are usually included in the programmes. The hotel has an excellent location. Trams, buses and the underground are literally at the doorstep. If you enjoy a good brisk, or indeed leisurely walk, the city centre is within walking distance and the city's ring structure make everywhere reasonably accessible. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Hotel de France Wien to anyone travelling to the majestic city of Vienna. As a five star hotel, It offers excellent value for money and is perfectly located for exploring all the wonders that Vienna has to offer.

This old style hotel, with classical architecture and old fashion decor, is excepcionally located.

At Vienna's main street ring, it is easy to reach everywhere, both walking or with public transports.

The room was spacious and comfortables. So was the bathroom. Nice breakfast, plenty of options.

However, the internet connection is poor (free), the parking cost is huge, and if you forget anything there, it'll be lost forever. The customer service will only reply that the lost and found dept didn't recieve nothing.

We forgot a coat within the closet. No doubt the room service found it. However, when we contacted them, nothing was found.

We are sure the coat was there....

unfortunately the hotel reputation is gone for us.

As usual, we stayed here for the location, which is excellent for sight seeing in Vienna. We were walking distance from many of the sites and right near a metro station.
The room was a bit dated and there was NO air movement in our room - we opened the window when we dared, but as it was chilly, we could not keep them open all the time.
The main bathroom is fine, although it was a high step into the shower/tub for someone six months pregnant. The toilet is in another little room, with no sink. (or fan!)
We found the furnishings to be dated for such a huge room-our room did not look like the professional photos at all. There was a nice sitting area and work desk along with the bed area.
The bell staff was super helpful and friendly. The front desk staff was friendly as well, but they did send us in the wrong direction for dinner when we asked for directions.
Breakfast is a large spread with a warm and cold buffet. There were plenty of options for your morning meal.
The tv is old and the wifi was very slow, although it was free which was nice for checking in and double checking travel details.

I booked this hotel and received an incorrect rate. I did not think the hotel would honor this rate because it was much lower than their normal rates. I was very pleased they did and did so in the most professional ways possible. A sign of a true 5-star hotel!

What I liked best: Very professional service.
Nice location.
Comfortable and spacious rooms.
Very large bathrooms.
Nice attention to detail.
Comfortable room temperature.
Delicious and varied hotel breakfast.
Adequate public rooms.

What I didn't like:

Nothing stands out.
Possible a more varied pillow selection.

Room Tip: The view from my room was okay. It's Vienna though so there must be some rooms that have amazing...
