My husband and I are not huge opera buffs however we were told by friends that we must try to attend. The opera house is absolutely stunning from the exterior. The interior clearly has a great deal of history behind it. Most areas are very beautiful, but it is certainly beginning to show it's age. That being said, that also adds to the experience and makes you feel like you have been sucked back in time. Look at the schedule carefully as we got confused and thought there was a show on a particular night, only to find we were incorrect. We had to change our itinerary in order to make a show. Tickets should be purchased in advance if you are considering this as they do sell out. That being said there is an option for standing room tickets. These cost 3-4Euros (as opposed to 25-200 for regular tickets), and you get a great view of the stage from some areas. That being said you must line up 1.5-2.5 hours prior to the show beginning (2-2.5hrs if it is a popular opera and you want a good spot). This was great for us because we didn't feel guilty leaving early since we aren't major opera fans. Also an option just to take a tour of the building but really it's the opera itself that is most impressive.
