“Experience up to par with expectation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2014

It's an Intercontinental hotel, so one expects a level of service that matched my experience. Hotel feels more classic than its age or external architecture may lead you to believe. Great service, attentive staff (was initially in a noisy room by the elevator, I was immediately switched without problem). Excellent buffet breakfast with a great variety to choose from. It was included in my rate, so I cannot comment on its price as a stand-alone service. The location is fine, about 10 minutes by foot from the Cathedral and downtown. Meeting space was nice, internet access on laptop and mobile phone was solid and fast (videoconferencing was good quality, a rarity with hotel internet speeds).

Room Tip: Ensure your room is away from the elevator bank. If possible, get a view over the park.

I recently stayed at this hotel and on the whole found it to be very good. I do agree with some comments made by previous reviewers; my room at least was small and the bathroom even smaller. So if it is large spacious rooms that you want, then this perhaps isn't the place for you. On the other hand the location is good and conveniently located for viewing the city. I stayed here on business for four nights and every lunchtime at the buffet they served one or two variations on the theme of curry. So, if you are staying here and having the buffet lunch, then you may experience the same thing. The only other thing that was disappointing was on one occasion I couldn't find a seat for breakfast - there were several conventions going on at the same time and they didn't really manage the breakfast seating as well as they could have done. I ended up eating breakfast on my feet! Needless to say I didn't enjoy it very much and ended up feeling very rushed. Overall though, the staff were helpful and it was a very pleasant stay.

Vienna's first five star hotel yet it does not rest on its laurels. Very welcoming with a pianist at the open plan Viennese coffee house just yards from reception. Huge room with terrific view over the park and the city beyond. 10 minutes pleasant walk to the Opera House and St Stephens cathedral. Right next to a U Bahn station and close-ish to the airport train terminal.

Service impeccable and knowledgeable concierge.

First thing's first - the only reason why this hotel does not deserve 5 stars is the size of its standard rooms. Simply put, the room is small. The bed is small (there are actually two beds, both quite narrow - around 140 cm). The bathroom is not small. It is TINY. It takes an effort to step out of the (tiny) tub and not into the toilet. A leprechaun might enjoy it, but I did not.

The hotel is visibly dated, but they try to cover it with gold and glitter to look antique. It helps (a little bit) to create a baroque charm to it. The personnel is friendly and helpful.

Their spa and the gym are a bit small, but modern, decent and not crowded. The location is actually quite good and very near to the city center (you need a 10 min walk to St Stephen's Cathedral).

Last, but definitely not the least, was the food. Their breakfast buffet is two classes beyond anything I've seen in Vienna before (stayed in 4 different 4* star hotels). The variety and quality will not leave you hungry - quite the opposite. Around the clock service is also recommended.

All things considered, if you are a smaller person, this is surely the one to recommend.

The hotel looks really dated from inside and outside. Location was lousy, quite a bit of a walk from city center and St Stephen's Cathedral. Although located just across the street from Stadpark station, that station was old and dingy looking and its line does not bring you to the center directly! You need to change trains which was a real hassle.Even my guy friend did not dare to take a train back to his hotel after dinner from Stadpark station. He rather walked!
Reception staffs and their manager could not care less and the staffs helping with taxis at the door just threw us into an old cab without even telling the driver where we wanted to go (we told the staff beforehand).
The only good thing was the buffet spread which was abundant.

Very pleased with my stay at the Intercontinental. Excellent and gracious service. Fine, attractive and clean accommodations. Excellent breakfast -- exceeds most other European hotels. Great location on the Ring. Across from the City Park. My rate was an excellent value compared to other hotels in Vienna and other large European cities. Save an hour for a tram tour around the Ring Road -- just 2.20E -- and appreciate this beautiful city.

The InterContinental has an impressive lobby and a great location. Stephansplatz is a 15-20 minute walk away as is the Vienna State Opera. If you don't want to walk, the train station is just across the street (stop: Stadtpark). The train station also makes it easy to visit Schonbrunn, the Belvedere Palace, or the Hauptbanhof.

Our room was comfortable and perfectly adequate in size but we did wish we had slightly firmer pillows.

What we loved most about the hotel however, was the buffet breakfast. Obviously, if all you need in the morning is a coffee and roll, paying for a buffet won't be worth it. But if you like to fill up in the morning before a long day of walking and sightseeing their buffet will not disappoint. There is definitely something for everyone! Along with the omelet bar, sausages, bread, rolls, and coffee, there was also a good variety of fresh fruit, gourmet cheeses, smoked salmon, cold cuts, and even rice and soup. It pretty much set the bar for all of the other hotel breakfasts we were to experience on our trip!

Dear crimsonclover9,

thank you very much for your valued feedback. The Hotel is indeed located very centrally, which makes it easy to explore the beautiful city.
Besides of the comfort of the room a good nights rest is very important as well. We do offer a "pillow menu" with various kinds of pillows. Please do not hesitate to ask for it the next time you are in Vienna.
We are very proud of our buffet breakfast, as it does not only attract our hotel guests but as well the Viennese itself.

I hope that you will have the opportunity to visit Vienna again.

Kind regards
