“Worth the wait”

Very good steak, seasoned and cooked to perfection, but don't arrive hungry. The slow cooking process leads to a wonderfully flavored steak (I recommend the Gorgonzola sauce), but be prepared for a long wait after you've made your order.

Ambiance: 5 - Wonderful little restaurant with beautiful wood interior and a cozy atmosphere.
Service: 2 - Wait staff is frustratingly inattentive and hard to catch despite the dining area's small size.
Food: 5 - The steaks are excellent once they finally arrive.
Wait: 1 - An embarrassingly long 2+ hour wait...as if they have to catch the cow themselves.

“abysmal.”

I was in vienna for a few days and i went there with a friend of mine. I`m a big fan of steaks but this place was basically a joke.

if you know what good steak is BEWARE of this place!!!!!

0. waiting time for the steak. waiting for 2.5 hours for the main course WITHOUT notice is rude, offensive and completely unacceptable. there is no excuse for this

1. a) i ordered a 750g ribeye medium rare - for 15% extra i got some american import stuff but it wasnt usda prime for sure. the meat looked nice, excellent marbling so it should have been at least OK. BUT the guy fried SLOWLY ?!?!!?!? for about half an hour on the charcoal. at the end it was part medium, even medium well - completely ruined.

1. b) he put EXCESSIVE amounts of cheap seasoning onto the steak. I think he even fried afterwards to make it worse. WTF??? the meat was overcooked, seasoned to death - a real piece of junk unfortunately.

2. service - non existent, we had to force the "waitress" to remain at our table while we told everything we wanted. ordering anything was a major challenge, the guests got no attention at all. The only waitress usually disappeared for half an hour sessions and while she was in the area she was completely unavailable.

We wondered how this place can be successful but seeing that only austrians were in the restaurant apart from me i think they have no idea what red meat is about.

The only good thing was atmosphere - it was a lovely place, nice design, really liked it AND they had charcoal oven as well. Everything set for a perfect dinner only the people should be changed.

“not sooo well done...”

Apparently, the Jolly Ox is one of Vienna’s best Steakhouses, according to a working colleague of mine. I love steaks; i was used to eat nice steaks & beef-filets at the various Portuguese restaurants in my former working-country, therefore i was really looking forward to the Jolly OX.

Beforehand: yes, the steaks were good; just good, that’s about it. (For EUR 30 you can expect a good steak in Vienna, though...)

BUT: have you ever waited 2,5 hrs for your food? YES - we were waiting for 2,5 hrs and got the food at 22.30 hrs, no joke! The meat was not rare as ordered (it was mediun to well done), the green pepper sauce terrible.

But i guess this place is such an institution in Vienna (and apparently always fully booked), so that they don't have to care about such things as waiting time or client wishes (the guy with long beard behind the grill who very slowly grills the meat, is kind of the actual attraction of the place) the service was friendly, but unperceptive and somehow overstrained.

Should you think about going to this place, please have the DELIVERY TIME of the food to your table confirmed IN ADVANCE when making a booking via phone!
