I was hesitant to spend much time strolling through art galleries whilst in Vienna, as I wanted to experience the life and culture of the city itself -- to see what makes Vienna so special, but Kunsthaus Wien is so uniquely an experience unto itself is that it exists in it's own cultural universe, where "tree tenants" share gallery space with artworks and where undulating floors are an architectural manifesto. Kunsthaus would be a treasure no matter what city it was in, but when you're ready for a break from the old imperial Vienna or the sterility of the modern, this is the place to go.
I walked to the Kunsthaus from the Wien Mitte mall and enjoyed the opportunity to get off the tourist paths and walk through neighborhoods where the store clerks probably didn't speak English, just to see how regular folks live. I grabbed a quick bite in the Museum Café and toured the Hundertwasser galleries and the temporary exhibit, all of which I found to be a refreshing change of pace. Highly recommended.
