If you love the city of Vienna and want to learn even more about its history and culture, this museum is for you! I'm not going to recommend as a must for the first time visitor to Vienna , not because it's not a great and interesting museum, but because there are so many other attractions for a newcomer to Vienna. If you've chosen to do a return trip to Vienna, then put this on your list. You really should know more about the thousands of years of history of this great and important urban settlement on the Danube. The museum begins with the Iron Age inhabitants up to the present.
A couple things to know about the museum. 1) It is in a chronological order that is relatively easy to follow if you realize this.2) It has a great collection of Viennese art as well. (The Richard Gerstl self-portrait is my favorite). 3) They have a regular schedule of special exhibitions which are almost always worth it and are presented creatively. 40. Their light-filled atrium makes for a really nice cafe and a chance to relax during your visit. and 5) Their museum shop has the best collection of Vienna books and related materials around. Everything from art to cook books to history to Viennese lifestyle are present here. Of course there is a great selection of art postcards and posters as well (but not the famous Gerstl self-portrait .... Why?)
All in all, one of the best city (history & culture) museums, I've ever visited. And it's right in the center of town on the Karlsplatz.
