“Not so happy at this hostel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2010

We rented an apartment for three nights at the Happy Hostel. It was not very good in comparison to other hostels I've been to.

Happy Hostel is located near the Westbarnhof (train station) and is about a half hour walk to the city center. It's close to Vienna's main shopping street. There are several nearby subway stops, which were easy to use and efficient.

The apartment itself was very big, with a kitchen, separate toilet and bathroom, sitting room and bedroom. The main disappointment was that the apartment was not very clean. The toilet had a stale urine smell and the apartment in general smelled musty. We cleaned kitchen utensils both before and after use because they didn't seem clean.

That being said, it was handy having a kitchen to be able to prepare breakfasts and dinners (supermarkets are within walking distance). There was a big fridge/freezer, toaster, kettle, and stove (the oven did not work). The kitchen was not well equipped, e.g. no chopping board or sharp knives, but you could make do with what was there.

The staff at the front desk are helpful and there is free internet both in the lobby and wi-fi in the rooms.

Happy Hostel was in a good location just off the main shopping strip. Its about a 15 minute walk into the city centre but its a nice walk past all the shops and people.
The Hostel was clean and the land lady very friendly. The staff spoke very good english and were helpful. The rooms are large and very clean. We stayed in a double room and shared a bathroom and kitchen with one other room. Internet is free and there are also laundry facilities. I wouldnt recommend for those who are looking for a social environment. Was more like a hotel style. Would definately recommend!!!

The hostel is very near to the main train station, Wien Westbahnhof. We arrived to the hostel by the side entrance, not the main one, but the lady at the reception was very friendly and helpful and took us the reception by the main entrance. After filling out the necessary paper work, she escorted us to our room. The rooms were actually like small apartments (all people were hostel guests), so a bit different from the hostels I am use to. The hostel 'apartment' consisted of a toilet, a separate bathroom with a bath and shower facility, a kitchen (inc. fridge-freezer, toaster, microwave, kettle), a shared 'living-room' (which had a large table with chairs, a TV, cupboards, and a bar table with chairs), and then either side of the living-room were the private bedrooms. The bedrooms had 2 bunk-beds, so enough to sleep 4 people, although there were only 2 of us in our room. Our bedroom also had a wardrobe and 1 bedside table. Overall the accommodation was very nice, the furnishing were a little dated, but well maintained. We noticed a cleaner had been throughout both days. The reception was manned all the time, and had 2 computers with free internet service, and there were plenty of leaflets available. Not too far away was a supermarket ('Hofer', aka Aldi) which was very convenient as no breakfast was included. We stayed 3 nights and shared the apartment with 2 different parties overall (2 women on the 1st night, and 1 man the other 2 nights). I would consider staying here again if I was on a budget.

We got a private double room which had a shared bathroom and kitchen with one other room however as that was empty we had those facilities to ourself. The room had a TV which is often rare in hostels. The staff were all really friendly. It is situated nearby the Westbanhof station which is on tram and underground routes. It takes less than 30 minutes to walk to the old town down the main shopping street. It was really good value for money and staying in the dorms would have been even cheaper. The internet at reception was free which was great and really useful for skint travellers!

Do not stay in the 6 bed apartment. It was truly the most awful hostel we have ever stayed in. When we arrived the room was clearly a dorm meant for upwards of 10 people and not an apartment. There were 8 beds spread between 2 rooms, one with a mattress which doubled-up as a disgusting sofa, with another mattress slung behind a wardrobe. The apartment itself was nothing short of disgusting, the place looked like an emergency accommodation for the homeless with furniture from the street. The place had not been cleaned; red wine was all over the table; dirty plates in the kitchen covered in something which looked like sick. The room was filthy (see photos). The beds looked as if they were 30 years old with yellow and stained pillows and duvets; yellow stained walls and mouldy ceiling in the bathroom. The furniture was a collection of junk-yard chairs and tables. The owner had the cheek to cover them with bed sheets. When we spoke to the owner (man with long hair) and demanded to change apartments he was very aggressive, angry and constantly shouted over us. He could not offer another apartment and everywhere was fully booked to our horror we had to stay. I have never stayed in such a appalling, dirty place. I beg anybody never to stay here. Also all of our guests ended up with bed-bites and rashes. Also the owner had clearly been into our PRIVATE apartment while we were out sightseeing.

Good Points
* Great location, 10 min walk from Westbanhof. Not far from Sudbahof either, a short tram ride. Next to the shopping strip.
* Friendly staff
* Free internet in the lobby - 2 computers
* Rooms are dated but clean and very spacious. We booked a private room and it had a kitchen also. Great value.
* Loads of washing are done for you at 3 euro per load for wash and dry.
* Breakfast was interesting - the guy who serves it is like Manuel from Faulty Towers (but he is very sweet all the same) and made a great brekkie.

Bad Points
* BYO toiletries

Great restaurant just down the road (pretty much next door) - ask at reception. The BEST viennese food.
