“Nice little hotel in a superb location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2013

Pension a und a is situated in a great location in Vienna, five minutes away from Stephansplatz but on a quiet and peaceful street. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the breakfast was of good quality and variety. The staff members were also helpful and polite. I would highly recommend the pension to anyone visiting Vienna.

Thank goodness for hotel reservations that can be booked, cancelled, re-booked, cancelled and re-booked! And thank goodness for gracious hosts like the ones at Pension a und a -- they must have groaned every time they received yet another notification from Booking.com but they welcomed us wholeheartedly. Normally I am picky but not that indecisive. It's just that Vienna hotels are expensive and don't deliver great value for money.

I'm glad I finally decided to stay at a und a! It's in the best location possible -- minutes away from Hofburg Palace, Stephansplatz, 2 u-bahn stations (Herrengasse and Stephansplatz), the beautiful pedestrianized streets, Grabenstrasse and Karnterstrasse.

We had Room 2, a small Comfort Double. The window opened onto a rather unattractive wall but at least it provided natural light and fresh air. It was very quiet. The bigger and more expensive rooms face the street and could be less quiet.

I loved the wood floors and high standard of cleanliness throughout the Pension. The bed was super-comfy and the room had very high ceilings, a safe and a refrigerator. There was a big closet for clothes, boots and luggage too.

Breakfast was attractively laid out on some tables near the reception area. A nice offering of fruit, cheeses, cold cuts, breads, yogurt, coffee, tea and juice. Our room had a tea kettle in case we craved hot beverages at an odd hour.

The staff were all very friendly and polite. Email communication was a bit slow but once we arrived, service was excellent. One evening, when the front desk was closed and our room card malfunctioned, we called the manager from the front desk phone and he appeared in 5 minutes to let us into our room.

Tips:

- See "Time Travel Vienna", the new 5D show on Vienna. It's literally across the street from the Pension.

- Walk along Habsburgergasse (towards the Hofburg Palace), turn left onto Reitschulgasse and meet your neighbours: the Lipizzaner horses! Their stables are 180 metres or 2 minutes by foot from the Pension. You can see the stables anytime through the big glass windows.

- For Starbucks' addicts, there's one at the mouth of Habsburgergasse. Better still, try out the Viennese coffee houses. Cafe Grientsteidl, Cafe Demel or the excellent Cafe Gerstner (best cake in Vienna, imho).

- If you're traveling with children, buy a Vienna Card. 1 adult and 1 child travel free for 3 days at 19 euros. Lots of other small discounts. The closest place to buy one is the Hotel Steigenburger.

- Don't miss the Esperanto Museum and the Globe Museum. They are small yet interesting. On Herrengasse near the U-bahn.

We stayed here for four nights over Christmas. The pension is in a beautiful old building in the centre of the historic part of the city. Everything is close by - the main attractions, the shopping streets, restaurants, the U-Bahn… The pension itself is quite small, with only 9 rooms, but it had all we needed, and everything was just perfect. The room we had was facing the street, and from the window you could see the old buildings across the street, lovely Christmas lights and could hear the horse carriages going by.

The room was well equipped, with a very large closet, (which also had a safety box and a small fridge inside it), a good sized bathroom (with a bath tub) and a comfortable bed. It was very clean and warm, and the heater on the bathroom wall was excellent for drying our clothes (it rained almost every day during our stay).

The breakfast was good, and we enjoyed eating it in our rooms (in bed!). The staff were very friendly, and on Christmas Eve there was a knock on our door. “Merry Christmas!” and we were given a box of chocolate and two angel figures. So very kind of them and unexpected, but only something you can get staying in a special place like this.

Thanks for the perfect stay.

You can't beat the location for this centrally located small B & B. Clean, spiffy modern rooms. Large bathroom. Nice service. We stayed in the small double and got an excellent rate. They accommodated our late arrival time and held our bags the last day we were there. Our stay was in early March which I guess is off-season and got a great deal 109 euro per night. Our room did not have a view but it was quiet.

We recently stayed at the pension a und a for two nights. The pension is hidden in an old building in Habsburgerstrasse. You go up in an old elevator to Floor M and there it is. The service is excellent and the receptionists were extremely friendly and helpful. We stayed in the private suite which was bigger than some apartments. We had our breakfast in our apartment. The pension is close to all the shops like Louis Vuitton, Dolce and Gabana etc. There are ample restaurants to choose from in the area, but we enjoyed Ilona Stuberl in Braunerstrasse 2.
i would recommend this pension anytime to young and old. It was really the best place to stay.

Room Tip: If you want to splash some cash, go for it.

Very helpful staff who went out of their way to accomodate our late arrival (arrange private pick-up which is €34 rather than the c. €41 flat charged if you get a taxi at the curb). We stayed in the apartment (Private suite) which is very large, and nicely fitted out, all seems brand new. Large kitchen & 6 seater dining room table. Equipped with microwave & Nespresso coffee maker. Huge flat screen TVs in bedroom and lounge. Friend slept on comfy pull-out couch which was nicely prepped for her. Daily cleaning service. Lots of windows. No Breakfast room, which is great as you just go and grab your breakfast and take it back to your room, so breakfast in bed at no extra cost. A bit of noise in the mornings as people check out etc, as bedroom in suite close to reception, but very mangeable. Reception is not manned 24 hours, but they manage it well (i.e. for later arrival they arrange taxi pick up and we left our luggage behind on last day after we checked out and they just gave us a key so that we could easily get back in, in case no one was around).
Fantastic location. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Private Suite (Apartment) highly recommended.

When we normally go tp vienna, we always stay in hotels "old style". This time my husband decided to try this pension set in an art deco building.
Everything was superb. Modern rooms, very clean bathroom, efficient staff and unbelievable location.
We were asked if we needed anything printed, a car for the airport organised, and above all an extensive plan if our morning do that we could make the sirport on time.
I would definitely recommend and go back
