“Provincial Austrian Mediaeval Castle, Great Food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2012

Excellent food and attentive service in a mediaeval setting.

They have 2 restaurants - 1 is more high-end with some plush curtains and cushions, the other is more "local" with chairs and tables made of ancient oak and a huge bellshaped "glass oven" which heats the room in winter.

Tried the signature dish being the huge schnitzel, which was perfect, golden brown and came with a cranberry-like sauce and french fries with salad. Finished off with huge AppleStruedel in a custard sauce.

Visited with a German-speaking local colleague, and who had a car so access is easy. I was the most un-local looking person there, being Chinese-Australian amongst a crowd of Aryan looking locals, but it was all friendly, although I sensed some curious looks - they don't see many international people, I guess. The young serving staff went out of their way to be friendly, trying out their English and me, my Berlitz phrased German.

Walk up from the mediaeval walled city of Feldkirk which has lots of walled arcades and interesting shops.

“Definitely worth the visit; great place and great venue”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2012

Four of us had dinner and went for the Shattenburg schnitzel. It was a great meal and good value for money.

The venue is spectacular and I hope to get back there with more time to enjoy the ancient castle and hopefully have time to see the museum. And, I will go for dinner again and try something else. There is an extensive menu.

JUST BE CAREFUL; they do not take credit cards; you have to pay with cash.

“1 foot long Wiener Schnitzel - an Austrian specialty”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2012

We went to the Schattenburg for my son's birthday supper. Schattenburg is an old castle, built in the 12th century. Surrounded by mountains this castle is located on a small hill in the city of Feldkirch, located in the most western province of Austria - Vorarlberg. Each of us ordered a different meal, amongst the orders was the 1 foot long Wiener Schnitzel - an Austrian specialty. All our dishes were delightful. We could not resist ordering Salzburger Nockerln as dessert. I am not able to describe that dish, but I can assure you that you will love it! The service is friendly and very attentive and the visit a must.

“Big-big schnitzel :)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2010

I visited this restauran in July 2010. It is a really nice place in an old castle, so the atmosphere there is really special.
We ordered a huge schnitzel, oh la la, after that we were hardly alive :)
In general it is a nice place to have a meal.
Best regards, Anastasia.

“Big Portions”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2010

I've been to the restaurant at the Schattenburg on a couple of occasions. They're known for their huge schnitzel ("elephant ears") but their other dishes tend to be pretty big, too. The last time I ate there the food was only so-so. I had a veggie dish. It is nice to sit out in the central courtyard on a warm summer evening.
